Another "One man and his dog" story, sent to us from a friend living in the remote west coast of Scotland. She was off hunting for her rubber ball lost in the seaweed line, but of the man and dog team, I was a little higher up the beach looking for flotsam with goose barnacles on it. We both spotted the bright yellow fishing net float at the same time and went that way, to discover a wooden pallet tangled with a plastic and foam float, tangled net, and rope, the whole encrusted with now dead goose barnacles. Ironically there was torn shopping bag in the tangle "proudly proclaiming 100% recycled plastic bottles"   I knew most of this little collection came from far away, perhaps Portugal, Spain or Morocco, as Goose barnacles are found there. Perhaps the bag remnants originated with a British tourist in one of those countries............ But I was more intrigued by the wooden pallet. You know that there is a conservative estimate that there are over 5 billion pallets worldwide. 5 BILLION !!!!! I suspect there are far more, judging by the junk lying around local crofts and cities and our countryside. But what was the thinking of the person who put this pallet in the sea to let it wash up on the beautiful white sands and pristine waters of Sanna bay on the Ardnamurchan peninsula of Highland Scotland ?   Haven't we got enough junk on this planet? Look around and you see wooden pallets lying around all over the place. They are a real blot on the landscape. It may surprise you to hear some of the major pallet manufacturers actually employ staff to locate idle pallets that have fallen out of their systems. I would suggest they have an insurmountable challenge to get all their pallets back once the pallets are unloaded. The fact that they lie, abandoned all over the planet is proof of that. Of course many are chopped up and burnt as firewood, or just burnt to destroy them, and that's not good for the planet either. Insights from a campaign tackling roadside litter will be used to inform local councils and highways agencies of the most effective methods of preventing grot spots. Sustainability charity Hubbub enlisted the support of tech company Ellipsis Earth to provide scientific analysis of its latest action against littering. The campaign focused on Glasgow and Cardiff, where initial litter mapping showed that on average a piece of rubbish could be dropped every three seconds on the targeted roads. Working with Broxap, Hubbub decided to trial car-friendly bins for drivers along with other initiatives such as billboard ads and social media messaging. Eight weeks after the campaign, Ellipsis Earth measured litter levels again and found the use of eye-catching bins around litter hotspots in Glasgow reduced litter by 45% within 20 metres of the bins, versus only 8% in non-hotspot locations. When a sign was also placed alongside the bin, this reduced litter by 58%. In Cardiff the combination of billboards, signage and eye-catching bins together reduced littering by 23% at areas around motorway services in Junction 34 on M4, South Wales. Broxap has worked with Hubbub on a number of campaigns aimed at reducing litter and improving recycling rates through the innovative use of bins. Good news! Mattresses can be recycled! What can you do to help? In the US alone, we put in about 50,000 mattresses every DAY into landfills. Camo Crew Responsible Junk Removal gets 97% of the mattresses we remove from peoples' homes recycled by shipping them to companies similar to this one. There are only a little over 50 places in the country that do this, and we are fortunate to have several in the surrounding area/states. Mattresses take up a LOT of space, and the companies that recycle them only take them in truckloads at a time. This is one of the ways that sets Camo Crew apart, we have a 27,000 square foot facility with an external mattress-room to store truckloads of them every month. “Events like the Byron Writers Festival show what’s possible on a large scale, and when you can stop 18,000 throwaway items from being used and going to landfill, it’s pretty exciting.” The Town of Byron Bay, Australia is making big moves locally to eliminate single-use plastic at events! By implementing a ‘Move to Reuse’ initiative at this year’s Byron Writers Festival, they were able to reuse 18,000 items and prevent 26 wheelie bins of waste from going to landfill. Byron Shire's new Single-use Packaging and Materials Policy came into effect in June 2024 and outlines that events will need to comply with the new requirements by December 2024. All events held in council facilities and on council lands, as well as events funded by council, must eliminate single-use items ranging from single-use foodware to single-use plastic event decor like glitter and balloons. It's amazing to see local councils take on the initiative of eliminating single-use at events! I am so, so tired of seeing a deluge of #singleUsePlastics pile up in and around #trash receptacles each day in my neighborhood #park. It genuinely confounds me that park #vendors (who directly profit from the #greenspace that houses their #business...) face no accountability when it comes to #pollution mitigation in the park they benefit from. ♻️ Please sign my #petition to kindly encourage that Park House—a fantastic and recently refurbished space in #Brooklyn's McCarren Park, that includes much-needed #publicRestrooms— stop the distribution of #plastic beer and coffee cups, and instead transition to a #circular cup or #compostable model. It is unacceptable that we allow and normalize #ecocide like this. We must simultaneously do the work to mitigate our own plastics consumption and also hold vendors to a higher standard. Because news flash: We don't have to live this way—and we used to NOT live this way!
