🌱🚯 Yesterday, as we ventured through 10 miles of the enchanting Welsh countryside, capturing the vibrant hues of honeysuckle, wild garlic, primrose, daffodils, and gorse flowers, we were confronted with a sobering reality. Amongst the beauty lies a pervasive problem: litter, discarded irresponsibly. But amidst the debris, we found hope. We witnessed the tender moment of two newborn lambs taking their first steps alongside their mother, a poignant reminder of the delicate balance of nature we must protect. This journey wasn't just about documenting the scenic splendor; it was a call to action. We are litterheroes, embarking on a mission to combat this pressing issue. Our route, marked by litter debris and rubbish, serves as a battleground for our upcoming litter pick battle. 🌊 Proud to have served as a Co-Clean Up Captain with Karl Heine for Save the Sound at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut 🦀 🧤 Together with a crew of caring volunteers, we removed harmful debris from Long Island Sound’s shoreline. Every piece of trash we collect helps protect the diverse marine life that call these waters home. While visible plastics (like cups, water bottles, spoons, food packaging, cannabis and tobacco packaging, cigarette butts, and abandoned toys) are concerning, their breakdown into smaller microplastics and invisible nanoplastics pose an even more significant toxic threat. These microscopic particles infiltrate our entire ecosystem more pervasively than whole plastics—now found in our air, water, and soil—and have been detected in wildlife and human bodies, from our bloodstream to our organs. By removing plastics before they can degrade, we're preventing this cascade of increasing toxicity. 🌎 🦞 Long Island Sound isn't just a beautiful backdrop—it’s a vital estuary where fresh and saltwater create a unique ecosystem where our actions directly impact this precious resource.🐟 🐚 Special thanks to every volunteer who joined us! Although beach clean-ups alone cannot make the systems-wide impact we ultimately need by reducing the plastic production, your dedication helps prevent marine debris from harming horseshoe crabs, turtles, birds, and fish. 🌎 Earth Day is next Monday, so this week we'll be talking about some of the methods we employ to help protect our planet. Today we're talking about pallets. We've partnered with Barco Materials Handling, located in Cambridge, Ontario, for our wood pallets. Wood pallets are one of the most eco-friendly products that can be used. New pallets are reusable, while damaged pallets can either be repaired or repurposed. What do pallets become at the end of their service life? 🪵 Mulch 🪵 Fuel Pellets 🪵 Animal Bedding And at the end of its lifespan, it biodegrades. Barco pallets are made using sustainably sourced wood. In 2020, the NWPCA and Pallet Foundation put together an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) for wood pallets, highlighting the environmental quality of wooden pallets and validating them as the sustainable choice - and the right choice for our planet. The demand seems to increase at the moment as there are 10 Portbin tides all working well in all 4 nations of The UK waters, taking out a large quantity of marine litter, that in some cases can be recycled, even the Portbin tide has got a % of recycled plastic in the main body. Yay! Good news! Volunteers have recorded finding less litter in this year’s Plasticblitz across the UK compared to last year, despite groups spending more time litter picking in 2024 than 2023. We lead the organisation of the Plasticblitz and work in partnership with the Environment Agency and Rotary. This year's mass clean-up saw a record number of hours spent cleaning up rivers. Teams across the UK clocked over 149 hours of litter picking and citizen science – a 12% increase from the previous year. A total of 466 bin bags worth of litter were collected this year, compared to around 699 bags last year. Plasticblitz 2024 (22nd June to 7th July) also saw a higher number of organised litter picks – 54 in total, of which 21 were based in London. Of the 10,346 pieces of litter categorised by citizen scientists, 71% were recorded as plastic, with plastic food packets and wrappers making the top of the list, followed by plastic/polystyrene pieces and cigarette ends. Chris Coode, CEO at Thames21, said: “It’s great to see the expansion of the Plasticblitz and the way it brings communities together to tackle plastic pollution, which should have no place in our rivers or natural environment. Together, we are making significant progress in clearing plastic from the UK’s rivers. “While it is difficult to pinpoint an exact reason why Plasticblitz teams have found less litter in and around rivers this year, we hope this can be attributed to increased community action and better awareness of rivers and their health.” Besides the usual litter documented, Plasticblitz volunteers often find quirky and interesting items lost in rivers. This year’s unusual findings included a plastic inflatable crocodile and a wooden mask. Previous Plasticblitz events have also recorded a plastic crocodile head, motorbike, caravan, and even animal bones spotted in the water. Our neighborhoods are drowning in beverage container litter, storm drains are clogged, our waterways are polluted...and our landfill is projected to reach capacity by 2040. ♻️ Curbside recycling just isn't cutting it, and tons of recyclable materials end up in landfills each year. The solution? Recycling refund systems, or "bottle bills", are proven to work. Ten states, including nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut, are leading the way.
