Another "One man and his dog" story, sent to us from a friend living in the remote west coast of Scotland. She was off hunting for her rubber ball lost in the seaweed line, but of the man and dog team, I was a little higher up the beach looking for flotsam with goose barnacles on it. We both spotted the bright yellow fishing net float at the same time and went that way, to discover a wooden pallet tangled with a plastic and foam float, tangled net, and rope, the whole encrusted with now dead goose barnacles. Ironically there was torn shopping bag in the tangle "proudly proclaiming 100% recycled plastic bottles" I knew most of this little collection came from far away, perhaps Portugal, Spain or Morocco, as Goose barnacles are found there. Perhaps the bag remnants originated with a British tourist in one of those countries............ But I was more intrigued by the wooden pallet. You know that there is a conservative estimate that there are over 5 billion pallets worldwide. 5 BILLION !!!!! I suspect there are far more, judging by the junk lying around local crofts and cities and our countryside. But what was the thinking of the person who put this pallet in the sea to let it wash up on the beautiful white sands and pristine waters of Sanna bay on the Ardnamurchan peninsula of Highland Scotland ? Haven't we got enough junk on this planet? Look around and you see wooden pallets lying around all over the place. They are a real blot on the landscape. It may surprise you to hear some of the major pallet manufacturers actually employ staff to locate idle pallets that have fallen out of their systems. I would suggest they have an insurmountable challenge to get all their pallets back once the pallets are unloaded. The fact that they lie, abandoned all over the planet is proof of that. Of course many are chopped up and burnt as firewood, or just burnt to destroy them, and that's not good for the planet either. Of course there is a solution for this, and for responsible, environmentally conscious businesses it's PalletEarth. www.palletearth.com #sustainability #circulareconomy #trackablepallets

The number of plastic bags washed up on UK beaches has fallen by 80% over a decade, since a mandatory fee was imposed on shoppers who opt to pick up single-use carrier bags at the checkout. According to the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) annual litter survey, volunteers found an average of one plastic bag every 100 metres of coastline surveyed last year, compared to an average of five carrier bags every 100 metres in 2014.. Large retailers in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England have been required to charge for single-use plastic bags by laws introduced in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. The charge was increased from 5p to 10p in 2021 for England and Scotland and is 25p in Northern Ireland. Wales, where the minimum charge remains 5p, has said it will ban the bags altogether by 2026. The society’s beach cleaning effort takes place all year round, but it collects a third of its data during its Great British Beach Clean events. Last year, thousands of volunteers found that drinks-related litter had increased by 14% in Scotland and 7% in England, compared with 2022. Overall, it recorded a 1.2 % increase in plastic litter across the UK, with an average of 167 items per 100 metres. The most common five items found were plastic pieces measuring 2.5-30cm, packets such as crisp and sandwich wrappers, caps and lids, plastic string and cord, and plastic bottles and containers. More than 100 litter-picks have been organised for this year’s Great British Beach Clean, which will take place 20-29 September on shores from Bude in Cornwall to Aikerness in the Orkney Islands. #plasticpollution #environment #sustainability #climatechange #education #reduce #singleuseplastic #reuse https://lnkd.in/e7_fkKCC

The Marine Conservation Society's recent report highlights a significant 80% decrease in plastic bags on UK beaches since the introduction of mandatory charges. This reduction, observed over the past decade, reflects the success of policies that impose fees on single-use plastic bags. The MCS calls for further action, urging governments to implement more stringent measures on other single-use items and expedite the proposed deposit scheme for bottles and cans. Despite the positive trend, overall plastic litter has seen a slight increase, emphasizing the need for continued efforts in reducing waste. #PlasticPollution #MarineConservation #SustainableLiving #EcoFriendly #BeachCleanUp #WasteReduction #Sustainability

If we know each other personally (or you've been following me for a while) you know that one of my values is living lightly on the earth. You also probably know I LOVE going to the beach. Here are some ways I make my beach visits more eco-friendly. 😎Bring Reusable Items: I always pack reusable water bottles, utensils, and containers to cut down on single-use plastics. 😎Leave No Trace: Clean up after yourself and take all trash with you. Leave the beach as pristine as you found it! Or better yet, pick up some trash that you see as you stroll down the beach. 😎Eco-Friendly Sunscreen: Choose reef-safe sunscreens to protect marine life. These are readily available anywhere sunscreen is sold. 😎Public Transport or Carpool: Reduce your carbon footprint by carpooling or using public transportation. 😎Support Local: Buy from local vendors to support the community and reduce the environmental impact of transported goods. You will find some of the BEST treasures at beach-side stands if you want something to take home as a memento. Artificial or Natural? 🤔 During our beach cleanups for Operation Ghost Farms, we discovered that marine litter can easily deceive you. 🌿 From #Styrofoam beads resembling stones to melted plastic imitating natural objects, it’s easy to mistake trash for #nature . These plastic remnants come from discarded #aquaculture equipment and other sources, breaking down into tiny fragments that blend into the #environment , harming both #wildlife and ecosystems. 🌊🪨 Don’t be fooled—always examine closely to differentiate between natural materials and plastic debris. If you find marine litter, please pick it up and dispose of it properly. Plastic doesn’t belong in nature! 🚫🧩 Operation Ghost Farms would not be possible without the support of Hyundai Motor Europe 🙏🏼 _______________ #HealthySeas #Hyundai #CleanUp #MarineConservation #OperationGhostFarms #Greece #BeachCleanup #RecycleRight #EcoWarrior #Plastic #FishFarm #GhostFarm #Artificial #Quit #WorldCleanupDay

The number of plastic bags washed up on UK beaches has fallen by 80% over a decade, since a mandatory fee was imposed on single-use grocery bags. The fee has even increased across most of the UK, with Wales looking to ban plastic bags by 2026. The most common items found during recent beach cleanups across the UK were plastic pieces, food packaging, caps and lids, plastic string and cord, and plastic bottles and containers. Mind Your Plastic has found similar results in our Circular Economy Ambassador Program cleanups, where plastic pieces of various sizes and food packaging make the Top 5 list consistently. The right policy can make a significant impact on the amount of plastic leaking into our environment. It's important to take action now to enable more success stories like the reduction of plastic bags in the UK and eliminate single-use plastic pollution in our communities. #PlasticPollution #PlasticBagBan #PlasticPolicy #ChooseReuse #PlanetvsPlastics #PlasticReduction #Cleanups #SingleUsePlastic

Imagine a cleaner, greener coastline where discarded fishing nets, ropes, and buoys don’t harm our marine life. Wales is making this vision a reality as the first UK nation to roll out a fishing gear recycling scheme. On Global Recycling Day, we collected an impressive ten tonnes of gear from seven harbours along our stunning coast. These nets, ropes, and buoys, which could otherwise end up in the sea or landfill, will now be shredded and repurposed into kayaks, bodyboards, and street furniture. Fishing gear accounts for up to 20% of all litter in our oceans. In Wales, fishing ropes were the third most commonly found item in last year’s Great British Beach Clean survey. By recycling fishing gear, we’re not only protecting our marine environment but also reducing litter. Together, we can create a real circular economy, where we recycle, reuse, and safeguard our planet. Let’s make waves for a cleaner, healthier future! 🐠🌏 Read more about this exciting initiative here: https://lnkd.in/e29BhjeM #WorldOceanDay #Recycling #CleanSeas

A whoosh of wind and a clatter of metal announced the arrival of Captain Re-Cycle, landing heroically between the crumpled aluminum can and the squished plastic bottle. The can, wide-eyed with fear, stammered, "R-recycling emergency? Does that mean...more flattening?" Captain Re-Cycle, a beacon of green and blue, chuckled. "Don't worry, Can-Do! It's not so bad for you. But for this eco-warrior," he winked at the smiling plastic bottle, "recycling is a breeze. they get reborn - new bottles, clothes, even playgrounds!" #RecycleHeroes #PETPower #EnvironmentDay ♻️
