HIDDEN HOMELESSNESS: The Unseen Struggles of Families in America While many associate homelessness with individuals on the streets, a significant portion of those affected are families with children. Shockingly, 7 out of 10 homeless individuals in America are families. Family homelessness often remains hidden from public view, as families may double up with friends or live in cars, making them less visible than those on the streets.   The reasons behind family homelessness vary, but poverty, domestic violence, and a lack of affordable housing are common factors. Homeless children face immense challenges, including disruptions in education, health issues, and emotional trauma. For parents, the struggle to provide for their families while homeless is a daily ordeal. Preventing family homelessness is a complex task that requires a multifaceted approach. It involves not only providing immediate shelter but also addressing the root causes, such as affordable housing, economic security, and support for survivors of domestic violence. Atlantans are currently spending 42% of their income on rent, leaving them vulnerable to homelessness after even a single crisis. This situation requires us all to take action, so we launched FreeRentATL to bring awareness to the widening wealth gap and offer crucial support to struggling renting families in Atlanta. Through our nonprofit we give these families a hand up, to help stabilize them and provide services that help them succeed and avoid future housing jeopardy. This year seven amazing families are receiving free rent for an entire year, in addition to financial literacy, food, and mental health and well-being services. Scenes of people living on the streets or in shelters create stereotypes around homelessness as an unsolvable problem. As daunting as those scenes are, the majority of people without housing or the threat of losing it are competent to take care of themselves and simply need a financial boost to move forward. In the UK, Greater Change partners with existing charities that refer clients for cash grants. Greater Change instigates a fundraising campaign and transfers money directly to the client’s support team. It’s a model worthy of emulation that has helped more than 900 UK residents get back on their feet since 2018. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gU4B-Fge

Private investors are able to profit from the homelessness crisis to help solve it by investing in supported housing.  What this means is that the government funds a series of housing providers, charities, and care companies to provide care and housing for vulnerable people in society.  These people could be homeless, victims of domestic abuse, ex-addicts in recovery, children leaving care, asylum seekers across the whole spectrum. There’s a funding package from the government to house and care for these people. The care providers that are funded to do this need houses to put the people in.  Where this intersects perfectly is, as in investors, we’re able to buy these properties and then lease them to the care providers. That in turn, gives us a government-assured income whilst at the same time, delivering a much-needed service to those people who need it by providing housing. We find ourselves in a really fortunate position with this because we are in a business that: 1. Makes profit. 2. Makes a material social impact.
