HomeAid Austin currently has 12 varying projects in our pipeline, 4 of which are in need of a Builder Captain!!!👷🔨 HomeAid builds and maintains housing and programmatic facilities for local nonprofit organizations serving those experiencing or at risk of homelessness by leveraging our relationships within the building industry to garner in-kind donations of labor and materials. Being a Build Captain with HomeAid Austin means managing the construction or renovation of the housing project and securing trade donors such as carpenters, plumbers, insulators, and roofers, to provide labor, materials, and other services. Vendors are also an important part of our projects as they can donate and offer discounted appliances and other materials. Historically, HomeAid provides an average savings of 50% of the total cost of the construction project through in-kind donations of services and materials! Being a Build Captain is a vital role in our community and will have a lasting impact. HomeAid Build Captains can attest to the value and satisfaction of completing a project with HomeAid Austin! There’s a U.S. study that found donations increased by 77% when nonprofits started accepting real estate as part of legacy giving. Additionally, the proportion of large donations (over 1.5 million yen) doubled. -Donations from income: cash -Donations from assets: land, stocks, etc. The latter is significantly larger, so it’s an area we should focus on. While I’ve heard from various sources that accepting real estate donations is legally and tax-wise complicated, and it’s often difficult to fully meet the donor’s wishes... The key challenge is how to make donating assets—beyond just land—easier and more streamlined. This seems increasingly important in an inflationary era with rising stock and property prices!

The TDS Charitable Foundation has published a report on the barriers tenants face in resolving housing issues, based on surveys with over 4,000 tenants. 🏠📊 It reveals that half of private renters and 38% of social sector tenants don't know where to seek help if a landlord or letting agent doesn't address a housing issue. 🏘️❓ The report will inform the development of the “My Housing Issue” gateway website, funded by the TDS Charitable Foundation, to help tenants resolve their housing problems through signposting and tailored information. 🌐🔍 #HousingIssues #TDS #TenantSupport #MyHousingIssue https://lnkd.in/ev6Chp5c

As a board member, I cannot be more proud of Rebuilding Together Peninsula and the work they do for our community. RTP makes repairs to homes to make them safe for the occupants. Here is a recent example. A woman was living in this home with front steps that were rotting out and getting treacherous. The home was red-tagged due to this hazardous condition. The owner was not able to afford the cost of replacing the stairs, and was faced with having to leave her home of many years. RTP came in and removed the old steps, replacing them with nice, secure new steps and handrails. That made it easy and safe for her to get in and out of her home, and assured that she would be able to remain in the home. This is what RTP does, in a nutshell. They work to make people’s home livable. Each year we accept a number of projects based on need and urgency. Donations to RTP pay for materials, and all labor is donated. The more contributions we receive, the more projects we are able to accept, and also projects with potentially larger scope.
