Today is Giving Tuesday- If you’re looking for ways to contribute, I’d like to share two organizations that mean a great deal to me—both of which work tirelessly to address food insecurity and support individuals and families in vulnerable situations. Saint Vincent de Paul https://ssvpusa.org/ Every day, teams of volunteers across the U.S. answer calls for help from neighbors in need. Whether it’s food, rent, utility bills, clothing, or other essentials, this organization steps in during critical moments to prevent hunger and homelessness. I’ve had the privilege of being one of those volunteers, and it’s been a humbling experience to deliver food or help with rent for families who simply need a bit of assistance to make it to the next paycheck. These are people in our communities—our neighbors—who find themselves in difficult circumstances through no fault of their own. Even a small donation can make a world of difference. Imagine skipping one dinner out to help a child have warm clothes or a family keep the lights on. Together, we're bringing hope and stability to those in the Roanoke Valley who are facing homelessness or housing insecurity. Through collaborative efforts, we're committed to ensuring that homelessness is rare, brief, and non-reoccurring. In 2023, our three housing programs made a significant impact, providing nearly $400,000 in financial assistance for rent and utility support. This support prevented homelessness and secured housing for 286 households, including 98 children. But our work extends beyond numbers; it's transforming lives. Each statistic represents a story of hope and resilience. However, the need in the Roanoke Valley remains urgent. As housing costs soar and economic uncertainties persist, more individuals and families need help. What better way to re-acquaint yourself with the Irish weather than participating in a sleep-out? On a more serious note, Ireland is a very different place than the country I left 15 years ago, and has made so much progress across so many economic and societal dimensions. Sadly, addressing homelessness is not one of them, and this is now a much more prevalent issue than it was when I left these shores. As we all know this is a complex issue and in 2024, there are over 14,000 people in homelessness across Ireland, including more than 4,000 children. An organization that is making a meaningful difference in tacking this problem is Focus Ireland. In 2023, Focus Ireland supported 18,000+ people, with 1,100 Households exiting homelessness, and 1,200 additional Households assisted in keeping their home. To help them make an even bigger contribution in the future, I’ll be taking part in a nationwide sleep-out alongside hundreds of others for their ‘Shine A Light’ campaign. This initiative aims to raise essential funds and awareness for the thousands of people, including children and families, who are facing homelessness. As homelessness continues to rise citywide in San Francisco, and especially in our community, our goal is to create a network foundation of support and compassion with our community partners, providing hope and a new start for those who have fallen on hard times. Together we can create a ripple effect of compassion and generosity that reaches far beyond what we can imagine. By joining forces and rallying support for this cause, we're not just offering temporary relief; we're planting seeds of hope and empowerment.
