It’s amazing to see what the Moutere Catchment Group has achieved in the short space of five years – more than 200 community members have planted 500,000 native plants, established four community nurseries, constructed two major wetlands and installed more than 50km of riparian fencing. It’s little wonder they were named a 2024 Cawthron Freshwater Champion as an emerging catchment! Although created by the community for the community, the Moutere Catchment Group has received invaluable support from organisations like NZ Landcare Trust - Ngā Matapopore Whenua and Tasman Environmental Trust. Ka pai to all involved. 👏 https://lnkd.in/gX8-TxbR

  • Supporting iwi and hapū revitalise the mauri of their tīpuna awa (ancestral river), through mātauranga Māori and western science methods, is just one of the many ways A2E is supporting groups across the motu look after their local waterways. That’s why we’ve recently provided support to Te Kapu Ō Waitaha, as they set out to address the languishing state and Te Mana o te Wai of their tīpuna awa – Te Raparara-ā-Hoe. Expert guidance from Lara Taylor (E Oho! Awakening Aotearoa) assisted Waitaha whānau identify needs, aspirations, issues and opportunities for monitoring their tīpuna awa. Lara’s support helped confirm ten monitoring sites – to be monitored for the next 12 months – alongside an action plan with clear next steps for implementing Essential Freshwater policies. Excitingly, the development of a digital cultural monitoring platform and app has been identified - A2E looks forward to bringing this to life and support Waitaha build their capability in freshwater monitoring. Now is a good time to see if your request for support is eligible for freshwater guidance. ➡️ We have until 2025 to deliver any support. Visit www.access2experts.net.nz for more information.

  • Discover the Inspiring Story of the Retaruke Catchment Group's Trap Bank! Nestled between the Whanganui River and Tongariro National Park, the Retaruke Catchment Group is making a positive environmental impact in one of New Zealand's most beautiful and remote landscapes. This small but mighty group of 20 farmers has set up one of the country’s first 'trap banks,' allowing the community to "try before they buy" and take a stand against predators threatening native fauna. What makes this initiative stand out is not just its innovative approach to conservation but also the significant community involvement. By providing traps for trial before purchase, the Retaruke Catchment Group has enabled locals to engage actively in protecting their environment. The trapping efforts have made substantial progress in safeguarding vulnerable species such as the Whio and North Island Brown Kiwi, both of which contribute immeasurably to New Zealand's biodiversity. This initiative highlights the broader implications of community-led conservation efforts: fostering a collaborative spirit, raising awareness about environmental issues, and building sustainable practices that can be replicated in other regions. The Retaruke Catchment Group's work is a compelling action story/ case study of how grassroots initiatives can drive large-scale positive environmental change. Dive into our action-packed story to explore how these dedicated conservationists are protecting native species and making a lasting impact. 👉 [Read the full story on our website] https://lnkd.in/gZFp8SSM #Conservation #Environment #Trapping #CommunityImpact #NewZealand #SustainableFarming #WildlifeProtection #EnvironmentalHeroes #CommunityLeadership #Sustainability #Innovation#positivefarmerledenviromentalstories
