Yesterday was World Wildlife Day. 🐢 👩 1 in 5 people around the world rely on wild species for income and food, while 2.4 billion people depend on wood fuel for cooking. 🦒 Cacti, seaweeds, giraffes, parrots, and oak trees are groups of species endangered. Currently there are one million species under threat. 💶 50,000 Wild Species Meet Needs of Billions Worldwide. Creating green spaces in cities and implementing sustainable urban planning, can indirectly benefit wildlife and contribute to their conservation. 📌What is the Status-Quo of the implementation of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities? Stefan Weil, Chief Creative Officer and Co-Owner of Atelier Markgraph says: "Responsibility begins on your own doorstep and in your immediate neighborhood. It is therefore essential to work locally in order to achieve and contribute to global goals. A rethink is a great opportunity, also economically. Prospering into a new understanding. A new understanding in which people remember that they are part of nature. Full of joy and energy. Ecological goals can only be achieved through technological advances. For example, in our studio we call this ‘Luminous Green’. We launched the ‘Green City Club’ many years ago, very late in 2011 but unfortunately also much too early. With the global standard of the SDGs, there is enormous potential overall. We should all view the UN’s guidance and inspiration as binding. And as rules for a new ethos. Initiatives like Making Frankfurt, which we helped launch, have the potential to be drivers of change. Again through fascination, inspiration, confidence and belief in the future. Go with the flow. Catalyzing Places for Life with Nature-based Solutions 🌱 – Last week, I had the privilege of attending the 'NBS Summit – the Urban edition' in Super Bock Arena, Porto (Portugal). This event was a treasure trove of insights from international speakers and solution providers who shared their expertise on transforming our urban landscapes. Here are some key takeaways: ♻️ Transitioning from an industrial civilization to an ecological civilization ⚖️ The power of Nature-based Solutions to mend our broken relationship with nature 📲 Digital technology isn't the panacea for every challenge 🌳 Green is the new grey 🌲 Ecological infrastructure trumps traditional dams for future resilience 🏙️ Avoid copying the Western urban model 💣 Our industrial mechanical mindset and grey infrastructure are destroying ecosystems (water, soil, forest, ...) 💧 We are disrupting water cycles, yet water is vital for green growth 🔋 Carbon credits shouldn't be a free pass to pollute 💧 Utilize rainwater and cool houses with green walls 🪚 Nature-based Solutions need maintenance too 🗺️ Ecological infrastructures must be planned and built across a scale 🌍 Regeneration is the next step beyond sustainability 🦆 Remember, we are nature.. Nature-based Solutions have undeniably proven their worth during this summit. I challenge everyone involved in the built environment to adopt a nature-first perspective. Listen to the land, understand its essence, and formulate a vocation that harmonizes with the unique community of the unique place. Real estate should be a tool for creating thriving environments.
