Since 2020, its dairy farms have cut livestock emissions by 12% and nitrogen leaching by 32%.

We’re excited to introduce our Farmer Focus Group, who will provide us with a ‘farmer voice’ to help ensure emissions mitigation tools are fit-for-purpose to support on-farm adoption.   The group is made up of 12 farmers from across New Zealand, with a range of experience across different livestock types and farm systems, to ensure a variety of views are represented. We’re looking forward to working with the group on our journey to provide Kiwi farmers with access to practical, effective solutions to reduce emissions. I am excited to share that I have attended the iGEM grand Jamboree in Paris. This year, I have been part of a team undertaking research on rapid detection of encapsulin proteins in Johne’s disease. The culmination of this year-long project had us presenting our research to a panel of judges at iGEM, a global synthetic biology competition with more than 400 teams in attendance. As the only team from New Zealand since 2019, we were delighted to receive a silver medal award. It has been an incredible privilege to work on this project with such a great team. A special mention must be given to our supervisors Amanda Board, Jovarn Sullivan and Peter Prendergast for their guidance in the lab. I would like to thank our platinum partners Canterbury Grasslands Ltd and ANZCO Foods and our gold partners Craigmore Sustainables. Last week a team of eager volunteers from Craigmore's Christchurch office rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into some work at Riverlution with the team from the Richmond Community Garden 🌱 Located in the Christchurch residential red zone (the area deemed no longer suitable for housing following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes), this enterprise is all about supporting the local community by teaching self-sufficiency through growing veges. The team lent a hand with a variety of jobs including relocating some heavy structures, building and planting a new garden bed, tidying up the food forest and spreading mulch, oh so much mulch! For the Craigmore team, Volunteer Day is an amazing way for us to connect with each other and the community, an endeavour that is core in Craigmore's values. We love sharing what we do and inspiring the next generation into agriculture, so our Craigmore Farming team were thrilled to host a study tour group at Landsend Dairy farm in Culverden. Forty students and staff from Marcus Oldham College, a specialist agricultural college from Geelong in Australia, joined farm and business manager Matt Redmond for a first-hand insight into Craigmore’s dairy business. The first-year agribusiness students had the opportunity to learn about the Craigmore business model, the innovative ways our farmers are reducing emissions and environmental impact as well as the use of technology on farm. Matt also shared his own career journey giving the students an appreciation of the challenges they may face in the future and the importance of achieving a work/life balance. It was wonderful to receive such glowing feedback from our visitors: ” Craigmore Sustainables approach allowing farm managers to follow their passions, innovate and effectively treat the farm as their own really resonated with our students. The property was exceptionally well maintained and such a stunning location. Great opportunity to join the Craigmore Sustainables - Farming team!

A critically threatened endemic freshwater fish found only in Canterbury has been discovered at a Craigmore Sustainables farm near Timaru. The Kōwaro or Canterbury Mudfish has been confirmed at the Somerset dairy farm south of Timaru following visits by Department of Conservation (DOC) staff in April and May. The population of mudfish was found living in the farm’s irrigation spring, an ideal habitat for mudfish because of the clean, clear water and the dense aquatic plant growth. The discovery follows the completion of a comprehensive waterway restoration project over the last two years.
