Ports contribute 30.2% of the Northern Territory's total GSP. Darwin Port breaks down some of the key NT figures from our #StateOfTrade report below! 👇 #economy #trade #ports #maritime #trade #supplychain #auseconomy #australia #export #import #shipping #freight #data
Ports Australia released its very first State of Trade Report, which captures the vital role of Australian Ports 🚢 The report shows Northern Territory’s ports are vital economic hubs that drive growth, support industries, and create opportunities for the region. 👷 𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬+ 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 are facilitated by NT ports, making them a cornerstone of local employment. 🌏 Over $𝟭𝟯.𝟲 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in annual international trade flows through NT ports, showcasing their pivotal role in global markets. 💰 These ports contribute $𝟵.𝟭 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 annually to the Northern Territory’s Gross State Product (GSP), underlining their economic impact. Darwin Port, the NT’s largest and only multi-modal port, exemplifies trade diversity by handling bulk commodities, livestock, containers and general cargo, motor vehicles, cruise and defence support. The port’s experienced team of marine pilots ensures that this is all facilitated in a safe manner despite the challenging environment that we operate in 🧑✈️ We serve as a vital link between industries, connecting local businesses to global markets and facilitating international trade. As Australia’s gateway to Asia, Darwin Port plays a strategic role in ensuring the NT remains a key player in regional and global trade. 📹 (warning: rocky footage!) Last week, Ports Australia had the privilege of visiting our valued members Port Phillip Sea Pilots Pty Ltd in Queenscliffe, Victoria. This incredible organisation is responsible for the safe navigation of large vessels to some of Victoria’s key trading #ports. Yvonne Kaloterakis and Zara Bryan took an inside look at their operations and rode along on a pilot transfer, also called a “step across”. Did you know that Port Philip Sea Pilots… 👉 have over 180 years of experience in marine pilotage? 👉 operate 24/7 and on demand? 👉 guide vessels carrying billions of dollars worth of goods each year? 👉 play a crucial role in Victoria's $111bn trade economy? It was truly inspiring to learn about their dedication to safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability, championed by the pilots and crew at Port Philip Sea Pilots. Thank you to CEO Thorsten Werges, coxswain Michael Randall and deckhand Dean Mitchell for the adventure! 🛥️ #ports #maritime #seapilots #trade #shipping #logistics #australia #auseconomy

Last week, GHD was proud to sponsor the 2024 Ports Australia Biennial Conference, one of Australia’s leading maritime events. A big thank you to our delegates Tristan Anderson, Renata Berglas, Paul Greaney and Samantha Chapman for representing GHD and engaging in important discussions about the future of Australia's ports and supply chains with leaders from major ports, maritime services and government departments. Tristan also moderated the Future Energy and Ports panel, where he shared his insights on how the maritime sector can lead the way in decarbonisation and energy transition. Key takeaways included: 1️⃣ Ports are in an enviable position to both lead and identify opportunities for wider supply-chain decarbonisation. 2️⃣ Governance structures will need to be reviewed as energy transition will require an increased risk appetite. 3️⃣ Ports will need to become more hands-on with their energy assets, in order to increase renewable content and optimise use. We need to focus now on producing as much low cost renewable energy as possible to enable the generation of alternative fuels in the future. 4️⃣ Industry and Government need to collaborate more than ever and there may be a need for collaboration platforms, including creating legal safe spaces to collaborate with potential competitors to achieve industry-wide transformation. #Decarbonisation #SupplyChain

🚢 Not your average terminal Today, Ports Australia had the privilege of touring the Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) at the Port of Melbourne—a terrific example of the latest tech that helps facilitate the $111bn combined trade value via Victoria’s ports each year. VICT is known for its cutting-edge automation (the only terminal of its kind in the southern hemisphere) as well as its emphasis on sustainability and safety across its entire operation. With 33% of Australia's shipping containers imported/exported through Victoria’s ports, VICT plays a valuable role in Australia’s trade economy. The tech: ✅ 17 automated container carriers ✅ 26 fully automated stacking cranes ✅ 1+ million TEU annual capacity ✅ Energy saving solutions implemented across the entire site Thank you to the VICT team Marco Quaranta Jorge Cuervo Redel for giving us a look at their incredible facility! #GlobalTrade #Innovation #Sustainability #VICT #Logistics #Ports #Maritime #Trade #Shipping #Freight #SupplyChain #Technology #Safety Zara Bryan
