Great to attend the Rail Freight Group annual conference last Thursday, hosted by Waterfront Conference Company. Key takeaways for me were: ⭐ Growth and new markets - To achieve 75% growth by 2050, rail freight is looking to target new markets. Express parcels, agriculture and fuels represent exciting opportunities. ⭐ Rail freight can help businesses achieve Net Zero targets -Transporting goods by rail produces significantly less carbon emissions than road. Customers are demanding more sustainable solutions and greater transparency with the development of ESG reporting and disclosure requirements. ⭐ Economic interventions can have a significant impact on modal shift to rail - Examples include DP World's successful Modal Shift Programme at Southampton and Network Rail's access charges discount scheme for new freight flows. ⭐ Decarbonisation - Short in-fill electrification schemes and the procurement of faster, electric trains could enable more efficient use of existing capacity on the network. It will also be important to ensure that the electricity distribution network can cope with additional demand and that EC4T charges payable by operators are not prohibitively high. #railfreight #netzero #decarbonisation #conference

Today, I had the opportunity to speak and be engaged in productive discussions at the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative AGM in Montreal. We had interactive conversations with binational local government and industry leaders on how to work together to create policies and programs that encourage “Transportation Transformation” along the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Trade Corridor, including strengthening supply chains and the capital capacity needed to both offset costs to the local level government and strengthen multimodal fluidity. It is extremely important that all levels of government and stakeholders work together to sustain our shared binational treasure - the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence.

#POLB COO Dr. Noel Hacegaba participated in a panel of global supply chain leaders at the Smart Ports: Piers of the Future Conference at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona earlier this month. Addressing the topic of resilience and adaptability, Dr. Hacegaba talked about how the Port of Long Beach has navigated recent supply chain disruptions to handle record cargo volumes and advance key strategic initiatives, including the Port’s industry-leading $2.3 billion capital infrastructure program, transition to zero emissions operations and deployment of its Supply Chain Information Highway digital initiative. Dr. Hacegaba joined senior executives from Drewry, Lloyd’s Register and the Port of Barcelona for this timely topic.

In May, we announced our plans to collaborate with Peel Ports Group to establish the first green shipping corridor between the UK and Ireland. We spoke to Container Management to discuss our progress. NatPower Marine's Development Director, Martin Olverson, shared his thoughts on the green corridor plans: “The Heysham-Belfast route is just the beginning.
