As announced in the 2024 Policy Address on 16 October, the Government will build Hong Kong into a centre for mega international sports events through measures such as promoting sports in the community and developing a host city economy in the sports industry. Furthermore, the inter-departmental Task Force on Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) will ramp up efforts in overseeing the smooth completion and commissioning of the KTSP and its publicity work, fostering the synergistic development of major sports events, innovative entertainment, dining, conventions and exhibitions, as well as tourism activities, with the goal of developing KTSP into a sports and mega event landmark. The report, Breaking Boundaries to Develop Hong Kong into a Mega Sports Events Capital, launched by 團結香港基金 Our Hong Kong Foundation in September 2024, suggested supporting the bidding and planning of sports events, enhancing sports infrastructure, and promoting sports entertainment to boost the development of mega sports events economy in Hong Kong. A former Portuguese colony, Macau is now Asia’s equivalent of Las Vegas … except that instead of being a leisure activity, most visitors to Macau take the business of gambling very seriously! Unlike Vegas, hardly anyone drinks alcohol at the tables until the business of making (or, more likely, losing!) money is done. Another difference is that Las Vegas competes with many other locations in the US, whereas Macau is the only Chinese territory where casino gambling is legal, which gives the businesses there a significant advantage. Nonetheless, the city is still recovering from Covid lockdowns and a lackluster economic recovery, with most companies still trading at very low valuations as a result. We visited some impressive sites in Macau and heard the respective strategies of companies such as Galaxy and Sands to grow market share and diversify revenue streams, while still pulling out all the stops to compete for the wallets of the ever-important VIP big spenders. After a tour of one of the complimentary suites for VIPs spending >$100k a day, no other hotel room can ever quite compare! Lastly, it seemed to me that most visitors to Macau are not desperate, poor folks hoping against all hopes for a lucky break. They are upwardly mobile, mostly young people, bedecked in the latest fashions, clutching luxury handbags, and gambling simply for the fun of it.
