Purpose-Driven Leadership | Transforming Customer Experiences | Nonprofit Organization leadership | Unlocking Opportunities | Senior Manager in Financial Services & Insurance|
In the past year, I had the privilege of leading and collaborating with 67 district officers, 211 clubs, and 5000 members. It's truly been an exhilarating journey, culminating in the honor of receiving the award for our District. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it has been 8 years since District 80 Toastmasters last received this recognition. #distinguishedbychoice

A Farawell Message Dedicated To All District 80 Toastmasters Dear Toastmasters, As we sail through the winds of 2024, our Toastmasters district has been a ship of camaraderie, laughter, and growth. As your District Director, I’m thrilled to share our voyage’s highlights, sprinkled with inspiration, humour, and a dash of storytelling at club meetings. Renewals Ahoy Our membership renewals have been as steady as a lighthouse beam. Like a well-baked loaf of bread, our clubs have risen to the occasion, ensuring that our Toastmasters family stays intact. Kudos to each of you for keeping the flames of enthusiasm burning! The 2000-Member Treasure Chest Picture this: a treasure map with an “X” marking the spot where 2000 new members joined our district. These brave souls embarked on a quest for self-improvement, and our clubs welcomed them with open arms. Let’s raise our mugs (of coffee or grog, your choice) to their courage! Retention: The District’s Secret Sauce Our retention rate stands tall at 94%, like a seasoned sailor who never abandons ship. It’s the glue that binds us—a testament to the friendships forged, the speeches delivered, and the evaluations given. Remember, a well-timed “Ahoy, matey!” can work wonders. A Slight Dip in Club Strength Our club strength average dipped by 2%. But fear not! It’s like a tide—ebb and flow. Perhaps our members were busy swashbuckling elsewhere, but worry not; they’ll return, swords sharpened, and speeches polished. The 20-Member Clubs: Our Hidden Gems Ah, the 20-member clubs—the cozy taverns where stories unfold, and laughter echoes. These gems are the heart of our district. Let’s celebrate their intimacy, their warmth, and their knack for turning nervous newcomers into seasoned speakers. Sailing Towards Distinguished Shores As we steer toward the finish line in June, our sails billow with determination. We’re not just aiming for “good enough”; we’re aiming for distinguished! Imagine our district flag fluttering proudly, adorned with badges, ribbons, and a touch of pirate flair. Mark Your Calendars! The Hall of Fame awaits! On September 21, 2024, from 6 to 9 pm, we will gather at the Chui Huay Lim Club (No. L90, Keng Lee Road, Singapore 308409). The clubs that qualify for the various awards will be invited in July when we have our final numbers out. Bring your wit, your tales, and your best pirate accent. Let’s celebrate our victories and raise our goblets to Toastmasters magic. So, my fellow adventurers, let’s keep our compasses aligned, our sails full, and our spirits high. Together, we’ll chart a course to excellence—one speech, one evaluation, and one hearty laugh at a time. Fair winds and smooth seas, Captain Swarna Kalyan, DTM District Director, 2023-24 District 80, Toastmasters International

‘Together we connect, together we transform’. – that was the tagline that aptly described the unique strategic alliance between Toastmasters International and Rotary International commenced in May 2019. Fast forward to 2024. The spirit of this alliance prevails today, with the participation of District 80 Toastmasters in the annual Rotary International Convention at Sands Expo & Convention Centre from 26 May to 29 May, attended by 14,000 delegates. Our Toastmasters booth became a living example of this alliance. While it was a one-stop conduit for Rotarians to get acquainted and connected with Toastmasters, visiting toastmasters from as far as Alaska, Nigeria, Uganda, Netherlands, India, Australia stopped by to say hello and exchanged name cards, including our DTM Balraj Arunachalam, our Past International President 2016-2017. On top of that, it was the spot for reunion with Toastmasters veterans like Susan Wong DTM and Chew Ban Seng DTM who were members of Rotary eClub 3310 and amongst the Rotarian volunteers of the Convention’s organising committee. District Director Swarna Kalyan DTM took the opportunity to get in touch with Rotary and Rotaractor Clubs in Singapore and Malaysia at the Convention. “We are trying to understand how the Rotary system works, how we can work together with them, so that we can take it forward by giving them workshops and tips to improve their leadership and public speaking skills,” she said. On a global perspective, Ms Carrie Goldbeck from Rotary International HQ called for more collaboration at the grassroots and organizational level between Toastmasters and Rotary in the next one year. “I would love to see more collaborations locally between toastmasters and rotary clubs. I would also love to see more joint initiatives at an organisation level. For example, we are creating some publications to guide Rotarians and Toastmasters on how they can work together to bring mutual benefits to members of both organisations,” she said. Dr John Chan, District Governor of Rotary District e3310 added that for service organisations like Rotary to be effective in what they do, they must find the right partners like Toastmasters. “To be more effective in serving the less fortunate, we must know how to communicate and expand our network together with like-minded partners like Toastmasters,” he said. Moving forward, District Director Swarna said she would discuss with the incoming district leadership team to explore ways to deepen the collaboration with Rotary. Experience the Convention with our pictorial moments here, and look out for an exclusive video interview with Carrie and Swarna in our next post. #distinguishedbychoice #district80 #rotaryinternational #Rotary #Toastmastersinternational Toastmasters International
