As announced in the 2024 Policy Address on 16 October, the Government will build Hong Kong into a centre for mega international sports events through measures such as promoting sports in the community and developing a host city economy in the sports industry. Furthermore, the inter-departmental Task Force on Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) will ramp up efforts in overseeing the smooth completion and commissioning of the KTSP and its publicity work, fostering the synergistic development of major sports events, innovative entertainment, dining, conventions and exhibitions, as well as tourism activities, with the goal of developing KTSP into a sports and mega event landmark. The report, Breaking Boundaries to Develop Hong Kong into a Mega Sports Events Capital, launched by 團結香港基金 Our Hong Kong Foundation in September 2024, suggested supporting the bidding and planning of sports events, enhancing sports infrastructure, and promoting sports entertainment to boost the development of mega sports events economy in Hong Kong. 團結香港基金 Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) released a policy advocacy report titled "Breaking Boundaries to Develop Hong Kong into a Mega Sports Events Capital" on 30 September. With Hong Kong athletes breaking records on the international stage, increasing attention has been put on sports development in Hong Kong. With the imminent opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park and the joint hosting of the 15th National Games by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, Hong Kong should capitalise on the momentum and propel the development of the sports industry through sports events. Professor Herman Hu, Vice-President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee Of Hong Kong, China, referred to the early 2000s, when there were already 3 strategies: promoting Hong Kong as a centre for major international sports events, supporting elite sports, and promoting sports in the community. According to him, even then, the community was already aware that mega events had a significant and beneficial impact not only on the sports sector but also on Hong Kong's economy. Is Cannes Lions useless, or is Chinese creativity running out of steam? The 2024 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has come to an end, and this time the voice from China seems to be even "weaker". This year's Lions Awards for China were one silver and three bronze. In addition, there was only one speech from China at the festival, no Chinese brands or companies landed in Cannes, only 6 judges from China participated in the final judging of the Lions, and the official statistics of the number of registered participants from China was the lowest ever. As we all know, 2024 is the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, and also the year of the Olympic Games in Paris, under the double buff superimposed, this year's Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity failed to ride on the wind of the wave of Chinese brands going to the sea, is Cannes losing its charm? Event in March 2026. Not much of time to stretch the bandwidth. With the spiralling cost, it has made it a poison chalice to frighten off the Aussie states + Malaysia from kee chiu to host even though there's a 100m pounds carrot being dangled to help the host nation to partial off-set the cost (in layman's terms) Even the future editions (read somewhere it's for 2030 edition), Canadian cities are also distancing themselves from the money burning exercise of what is essentially a scaled down sports meet (no football etc) Personally I think the hosting money / cost could be better spent on other critical items on SG's bucket list (rmb the budget burst of the YOG 2010 edition) vs the other side of the divide where Singapore can host big events well, rara the country to be more sporty / ActiveSG etc..which may not immediately yield tangible results until years later *update - SG has, afterall, not going to bid to step-in as replacement host for the C'wealth Games 2026.

Thank you, Singapore Indoor Stadium. In 1993, my partner and I had a small little dream. We wanted to invite world-class gurus to transfer their technology and expertise to our people at an affordable price. In doing so, we could improve livelihoods, lifestyles, and strengthen the country and economy. The first speaker we invited was Mr. Tom Hopkins. Unfortunately, his fee and out-of-pocket expenses were way beyond our budget and, in fact, were more than our annual profit. Fortunately, our dream was much greater than our fear, and our grit was stronger than the challenges. Long story short, we became the first company to book the Indoor Stadium to tap into the economy of scale and run our seminar, bringing in a total of eight international experts that year. We are also arguably the only company that has run a series of seminars at the same venue for years, featuring renowned speakers including President Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Anthony Robbins, and Robert Kiyosaki. Since the first seminar, we have organized similar events internationally at various stadiums. Yours truly had a chance to speak at a football stadium for an audience of more than 50,000 participants. Looking back, life has taught us that when you have an electrifying dream, many people will rally behind you to help you turn your dream into reality. The more you focus on your dreams, the less formidable the challenges become. The person who usually wins is the one who never gives up trying. Some of the saddest words that I have ever heard or read are, "I could have done something about my dream." https://lnkd.in/gqrDg_Jf

🥇 🎢 The Summer Olympics are not just about sports—they're a financial rollercoaster! Here are some surprising facts: ◼️ Sky-High Costs: Hosting the Olympics can break the bank. Rio 2016 was projected at $2.8B but ended up costing over $13B. Montreal 1976 took 30 years to pay off its debt! ◼️ Mixed Economic Impact: While Barcelona 1992 thrived, Athens 2004 still struggles with financial burdens. ◼️ Infrastructure Investments: New venues can become "white elephants," but some investments, like transportation, benefit locals long-term. ◼️ Big Bucks from Sponsorship: The IOC rakes in revenue from sponsors and broadcasters. NBC paid $1.23B for Rio 2016 U.S. broadcasting rights, and major sponsors include Coca-Cola and Visa. ◼️ Ticket Sales & Tourism: London 2012 sold 8.2M tickets, generating $1B. However, the tourist influx can strain local resources. ◼️ Economic Displacement: The Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016 Games led to resident evictions for venue construction. ◼️ Legacy Planning: Cities like London 2012 and Sydney 2000 successfully repurposed venues for community use and housing. ◼️ Massive Security Costs: Athens 2004 spent $1.5B on security, including post-9/11 cybersecurity measures. The financial side of the Olympics is as intense as the competitions! 🏟️🌍 #Olympics #Finance #SummerGames #EconomicImpact #Sponsorship #LegacyPlanning
