We are pleased to announce that Haldanes’ Managing Partner Andrew Powner has been listed in China Business Law Journal's The A-List 2024-25: Visionaries, which identifies those PRC and foreign firm lawyers most highly recommended by China's legal market. Andrew specialises in criminal defence, including financial crime for corporations and individuals in Hong Kong and abroad; judicial review; mutual legal assistance; letters of request; extradition; customs and excise, inland revenue and immigration investigations; also, national security law as well as securities (SFC/SEHK/HKMA) and regulatory work. Over the past 30 years, Andrew has successfully defended many large-scale white-collar commercial crime cases brought by the ICAC, the CCB and the Police. He engages in detailed preparation of cases for the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Final Appeal and has developed a network of excellent defence counsel /senior counsel in Hong Kong and internationally. #CriminalDefence #CBLJ #China #Lawyers #Visionaries #LawFirm #HongKong #Haldanes

Grateful for the opportunity to represent The Law Society of Hong Kong to attend and share at a law seminar organised by the Zhongshan Lawyers Association. This is a very thought-provoking event since lawyers from the three jurisdictions, i.e. Mainland, Macau and Hong Kong, gave their opinions on the same legal questions about contract and property matters. It reveals the interesting similarities and differences between the civil law system (Mainland and Macau) and the common law systems (Hong Kong). The event was well organised, with more than 200 lawyers participating and with simultaneous interpretations of Chinese, English and Portuguese. Very enjoyable, and by learning more about each jurisdiction, I believe lawyers can be more effective in solving client’s practical matters.

When eight top-ranked lawyers from the same firm are selected for recognition from among some of the most highly regarded firms and individuals in the region, it sets something of a precedent. Sharing the honours at Haldanes, Partners Jonathan Midgley, Geoffrey Booth, John McLellan, Andrew Powner, Felix Ng, and Paul Wang, together with Consultants Tim Hancock and Willem Jan Hoogland have been included in the 2025 edition of Lexology Index report on Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR as “Elite Thought Leaders”, “Thought Leaders” or “Recommended”. Congratulations to all of them. All we need to do now is make it nine in 2026! #LexologyIndex #Haldanes #LawFirm #HongKong #Lawyer https://lnkd.in/eiZV3PPZ

🎊 Happy Friday 🎊 I am delighted to share that we together with Counsel Mr. Steve Cheung of Erik Shum's Chambers led by Mr. Tony Li SC of Des Voeux Chambers successfully appealed against both the conviction and sentence on behalf of our client at the Court of First Instance of the High Court on 11 December 2024 (HCMA 496 of 2023). Our client, who was represented by another firm of solicitors and Counsel, was convicted after trial on 1 count of causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving in connection with a serious traffic accident that happened on 18 July 2022. In this appeal, the Court ruled that the trial Magistrate did not have sufficient grounds and should not have fully refused to accept our client’s testimony, as well as the evidence of the second defense witness, a cardiologist expert. The Court accepted all 4 grounds of appeal submitted by our legal team. After applying the legal principle laid down in the recent landmark Court of Final Appeal case of HKSAR v. Hui Lai Ki (FACC 13 of 2023), the Court allowed the appeal and quashed the sentence of 9 months’ imprisonment. The full Judgment can be viewed here: <https://lnkd.in/gyWxPvhu>

“Sweet was the walk along the narrow lane”, according to the English poet William Wordsworth. Now we’re not sure how the Dragon’s Back trail compares with Wordsworth’s Lake District, but we’re sure it stirred similar sentiments in our intrepid team from Haldanes as they took part in the Hong Kong Legal Walk for charity. Well done to Jonathan Midgley, Geoffrey Booth, Andrew Powner, Staffani Lok and Sherry He. Bare knees notwithstanding, it’s all in a good cause. #Haldanes #LawFirm #HKLW2024 #LegalCommunity #CSR #HongKong
