Hong Kong is ramping up its efforts to become Asia’s premier mega-event hub, with a key focus on the new Kai Tak Sports Park, set to open in March 2025! This $4 billion stadium will be a game-changer, hosting major events like sold-out Coldplay concerts and the renowned Hong Kong Sevens. In 2024 alone, the city plans to host over 200 large-scale events, including sporting contests, cultural festivals, fashion shows, and tech forums, further cementing its position as Asia’s “Events Capital.” The Sports Park’s 50,000-seat capacity fills a critical gap, boosting Hong Kong’s economy through increased tourism and infrastructure upgrades. Similar to other global cities, Hong Kong is expected to reap lasting economic and social benefits, creating a legacy that will enhance its global status for years to come! Hong Kong’s rising economy is resulting in mass international trade and investment opportunities. Local businesses and global networks are benefitting from this initiative. Hong Kong is not a place to miss! In the wake of recent remarks about Singapore's exclusive deal, it's pertinent to recall the adage, "吃不到葡萄说葡萄酸" — "saying the grapes are sour when one can't have them." This saying invites us to reflect not on the critique itself, but on how we can rise above it through enhanced efforts in business development and sales. Criticism, while at times may seem unwarranted, often highlights the need for continuous improvement and innovation in our approaches. Instead of responding to negative feedback with disdain, there's a greater opportunity for us to double down on our efforts in business development, enhancing our strategies, and refining our sales pitches to not just meet but exceed expectations. This moment is a call to action for strengthening our commitment to excellence, innovation, and strategic growth. Let's leverage this as an opportunity to showcase our capabilities and drive towards even greater successes. #BusinessDevelopment #SalesExcellence #StrategicGrowth #Innovation

Korea’s rising profile as a creative and cultural force is exciting to see. But underneath the growing popularity of its pop culture – and how K-pop has become a global sensation – lies the dynamic role of regulations in fostering the growth of local industries. Indeed, creative sectors thrive best in markets with supporting policies, and there are profound lessons investors, policymakers, and businesses can learn from Korea’s remarkable journey. Should be rebranded as Entertainment Hub. It shows Singapore's strong ability to be swift (pun intended) in re-transformation and the execution was coldly played (cringy pun). On hindsight, does it suggest that there was a poor feasibility assessment for such an expensive investment? Singapore isn't a strong sporting nation. We have passion and desire to be one, but reality is different. What were the chances of us succeeding as a sporting hub for Asia? Well, there is no need for an answer. Let's say we made a mistake. Every business and country will make mistakes. It is always about the ability to recover and recreate a new path. Singapore isn't perfect, but facing up to realities, recovery and execution ability are strengths too often underestimated.
Is the best strategy to ensure the Singapore Sports Hub’s financial viability one that turns it into a concert hub? Coldplay and Taylor Swift packed the venue for six nights - that is a feat few sports teams can achieve. But thinking back to the Women’s International Tennis here, it wasn’t easy to pack the indoor stadium - and only if Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova or some big name played. In fact, the last sports event that saw a full national stadium was the Malaysian Cup - when Singapore was still in it in the 1990s and it was the old national stadium. This isn’t unusual around the world. When Lionel Messi toured Japan, he couldn’t fill the venue either. Sports can’t beat entertainment - which is why the most successful leagues, whether NBA or NFL, have crazy halftime shows. It gets people coming, it’s something fun to watch. Economists have predicted the Eras tour could generate up to $500m for Singapore. Our GDP forecasts have also been revised upwards. Few sports events can accomplish that. So does the future of the Singapore Sports Hub lie in concerts? Mubin Saadat and I asked this question of Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy’s Terence Ho and here is his answer, published today in The Straits Times. #behindthescenes #liveentertainment #concerts #taylorswifterastour #coldplay #entertainmentindustry #musicindustry
