It was an absolute pleasure showcasing some the topics andcontent of the free online programme on Digital and Media Policy in Africa offered by Stellenbosch Department of Journalism and the Namibia Media Trust. Alongside Koliwe Majama, Zoé Titus, and Guy Berger we touched the tip of a constantly evolving debates on Digital Regulation and Democracy in Africa. We discussed what informed digital regulation in the continent twenty years ago and tracked its path to the current characteristics of the digital society, where online polarization, unclear content moderation practices (e.g. political micro-targeting), shrinking civic space and press freedom in some countries, rising surveillance practices and self-censorship, concerns on data governance and privacy and much more have come to shape it - particularly during periods of elections. With the rapid growth in user numbers and technological shifts—such as the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by state and non-state actors—we now find ourselves in a time of uncertainty that demands greater attention and action from all stakeholders of the information society on the policies and practices. Journalism isn't dead, but it is transforming. I was heartened to hear a sentiment I've said echoed at Press Forward's Independent Media Summit Saturday. Something I remarked on during the day was the spirit of cooperation that exists in the media industry today. Not so long ago, "beating the competition" was a primary goal for most media outlets. While there is still a spirit of healthy competition among journalists (we all love getting a good scoop) there is also a realization that we are all in this together. It was quickly obvious that so many of Canada's independent media are in the same place Future of Good is - we're here, we're doing community-changing work, but how do we get to sustainability? How do we survive long enough to grow our newsrooms to provide the journalism that enough people will pay for, so we can produce more? Thankfully, Press Forward's summit was about that, and I am going back to my newsroom armed with compelling knowledge. https://press-forward.ca/
