Journalism isn't dead, but it is transforming. I was heartened to hear a sentiment I've said echoed at Press Forward's Independent Media Summit Saturday. Something I remarked on during the day was the spirit of cooperation that exists in the media industry today. Not so long ago, "beating the competition" was a primary goal for most media outlets. While there is still a spirit of healthy competition among journalists (we all love getting a good scoop) there is also a realization that we are all in this together. It was quickly obvious that so many of Canada's independent media are in the same place Future of Good is - we're here, we're doing community-changing work, but how do we get to sustainability? How do we survive long enough to grow our newsrooms to provide the journalism that enough people will pay for, so we can produce more? Thankfully, Press Forward's summit was about that, and I am going back to my newsroom armed with compelling knowledge. https://press-forward.ca/

Moral criticism is always legit, but also tricky, as we have a fundamental geopolitical problem, which has the world community facing a deadly triage problem. Wich of the suffering peoples should one help first? The people suffering in Ukraine, Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, the Congo, Mali, etc..? Russia is the designer of all these problems and more, and while supporting Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthi, Russia is an extremely racist country, now posing as a 'friend of the global south'. If we eventually mean to save Palestine we must, shall and will therefore first shut down Russia's current role and influence completely, and permanently by force. Only than will the world be able to solve any of these injustices. And also, Slava Ukraine.
