In this week’s editions of the Strait Area Reporter and the Advocate is the column I wrote as we celebrate National Newspaper Week. It was an honor, privilege, and honestly quite humbling, to be one of five to write an op-ed for News Media Canada to showcase the importance of newspapers in Canada. In an era where factual journalism is more important than ever, false information travels much faster than the truth. We need trusted journalism. Journalists check the facts so that readers can trust the local, original news content that, in many cases, cannot be found anywhere else. While journalists dedicate their time, expertise, and energy to provide accurate and balanced reporting, others invest in disinformation for their own benefit. For many online platforms, the content itself is secondary to the reactions it generates from their clickbait. National Newspaper Week is an opportunity to celebrate the unwavering commitment of newspapers to delivering the news that shapes our lives. It is also a time to reflect on our collective responsibility to combat misinformation and avoid spreading falsehoods.
