We are proud to co-sponsor the annual Saving Journalism conference, gathering journalists, editors, and researchers, now in its fourth year. Special thanks to Anya Schiffrin for assembling a remarkable event. The conference assesses solutions being tested to address the crisis in journalism, seeking opportunities for adaptation, adoption, and scaling of solutions. Now up: Taylor Owen discussing the platforms’ responses to the Canadian News Act, which seeks to force platforms to compensate publishers for content on which the platforms, not publishers, profit. On the one hand, platforms have now ceased circulating 98 percent of local journalism in retribution; on the other, we now have a model for regulation that can be studied, refined, and adapted. #SavingJournalism #SavingJournalism4

While all eyes are on the most dramatic defamation celebrity case the nation has seen (thanks to Justice Lee and a comprehensive, contemporary 21st century judgement - finely filtered through a gender sensitive lens) we need to now turn our eye to what is NOT being reported. Good, well reported court coverage is critically important beyond capital cities. Small towns, regional and remote communities need to know what's happening in their courts and how judgements are shaping, or reflecting, community standards and culture - or not. But, they are not getting their fair share of public interest journalism! Today's release of the Australian News Sampling Project: 2023 Report by PIJI (Public Interest Journalism Initiative) is critically important and timely reading for everyone - hello MP's, Councillors, State/Territory legislators - who cares about democratic participation. Because we all know - information is key! #journalism #democracy #publicinterestjournalism Public Interest Journalism Initiative The Walkley Foundation for Journalism Judith Neilson Foundation Susan McKinnon Foundation Women In Media Australia MEAA Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) The Australian Financial Review Women Lawyers Association ACT Australian Rural Leadership Foundation Canberra Lawyers Michelle Rowland MP Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts
