I was honoured to attend FREEDOM UNDER LAW and Stellenbosch Department of Journalism’s annual lecture, addressed by Advocate Shamila Batohi, the National Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the National Prosecuting Authority. She spoke emphatically on how the NPA is rising from the ashes of state capture and rebuilding its capacity to uphold South Africa’s rule of law through prosecutions. She notes that since 2019 the NPA has recruited more than 1 000 new staff. Since 1994 the NPA has recovered more than R44 billion from the proceeds of crime, 46% of which was recovered in the last 5 years under her leadership. Prior to her lecture, I spoke to SABC News about how South Africans are worried that not enough is being done to prosecute corruption and violent crime, and Adv Batohi needs to reassure the public that the NPA is on the right track. At the second partnership lecture hosted by Freedom under Law and Stellenbosch Department of Journalism, National Director of Public Prosecutions Adv. Shamila Batohi reaffirmed the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) commitment to impartial justice, free from political influence. She acknowledged public skepticism in high-profile cases but stressed that a strong NPA is crucial to preventing another state capture crisis. Batohi highlighted initiatives like increased staffing, specialized training, and new anti-corruption units as part of the NPA’s focus on tackling corruption and violent crime. She closed by calling for collaboration across sectors to support the NPA and uphold the rule of law in South Africa. #stelliesjourn #FULSULecture #fass_stellenboschuniversity
