As a Clinical Supervisor to Psychologists, I hear many young psychologists share 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆: 🚩𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝗻- 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Supervision sessions or case consultations governed by HR people or business partners of Psychologists, with zero knowledge of psychotherapy,ethical practices or mental health. 🚩𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: For any psychologist who raises concerns- they are either black-listed or given warning or politely ignored in clinical meetings. 🚩𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘁: Which clinical ethical guidelines allow Mental Health Tech companies to use confidential client data in the name of a therapist’s performance evaluator? None of the companies I have worked with ever asked me for client's session notes. ▶️𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼'𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆: ✔️𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹/ 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: Values that are your non- negotiables! ✔️𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Stay well versed with ethical and legal aspects in your country of practice. ✔️𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Learn about the work culture and ethical practices of different organizations. ✔️𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄-𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 : Its your right! and if you are shamed or denied that opportunity- consider it as an immediate red flag! ✔️ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ask for time to reply back to mails. If it doesn’t feels right, chances are it isn’t. Psychologically safe environments empower. 🚀 Growing in My Role as Clinic Supervisor and Associate Psychologist! 🌟 Life has been incredibly busy, so I am only now sharing a long-overdue update about my current role at ImPossible Psychological Services. It has been a wonderful experience thus far, and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned and how it’s shaping my path towards becoming a clinical psychologist. 🌱 Realities of a therapist: Working closely with therapists has been eye-opening. While it's easy to see them as superhumans that are ever-present with their clients, I've learned that they too have good and bad days. I'm grateful for the insight into the incredible work they do, both with clients and behind the scenes. From diligently maintaining client notes (because no, they don't magically remember every client) to ensuring they self-care; It's all about providing the best possible service and meeting client needs. This experience has highlighted the importance of balancing professional responsibilities with personal well-being to truly make a difference. 🌍 Understanding Diversity: Engaging with clients from diverse backgrounds has been an insightful learning experience. People vary not only in cultural backgrounds, but also in their knowledge of therapy, reasons for seeking help, literacy levels, and readiness for therapy. It has deepened my empathy and understanding of the unique challenges and needs that each client faces. 🤝 Navigating Service Agencies: While I have had knowledge of the agencies available in Singapore, it is my first time witnessing first-hand how various agencies and systems come together to support clients. It really takes a village to support the under-resourced, and while there are numerous programs available, navigating them can be complex and challenging. Through my work in custody evaluations and interactions with various social workers, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the incredible efforts of our social service counterparts. 🚀 Towards Clinical Psychology: My experience thus far has been integral to my journey towards becoming a clinical psychologist. They’ve equipped me with practical skills, deepened my psychological knowledge, and given me the experience to see the challenges yet fulfilment of being a therapist. I’m incredibly grateful for this role and the continuous learning it provides.
