Psychologist Supervisor: JOB DUTIES IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE:  •(These duties are illustrative only. Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties or other job-related duties as assigned.) Supervises psychology staff (i.e., psychologists, psychology assistants, students & trainees) including scheduling & assigning work, monitoring services provided, reviewing work & evaluating performance, recruiting, interviewing & hiring new psychology staff, recommending transfers, Client offs, promotions, disciplinary actions & rewards & plans, directs & provides training & staff development programs. •Plans, develops, implements, administers & assesses psychological programs, services & research activities & write policies & establishes procedures on delivery of psychological services. •Consults with administration & staff on matters pertaining to psychological unit, represents psychological unit at meetings, conferences, seminars & workshops & provides information & advice on psychological matters to other divisions, agencies, community organizations & other interested parties. •MAJOR WORKER CHARACTERISTICS: •Knowledge of clinical psychology; counseling; psycho diagnostics; psychotherapy; interviewing; statistics; project/program management; employee training & development.  •Ability to understand abstract field of study; write meaningful, concise & accurate reports; write instructions, specifications, or technical manuals; define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; recognize unusual or threatening conditions & take appropriate action; counsel others on sensitive matters; interpret extensive variety of technical matters in books, journals & manuals.  •Developed after employment. •MINIMUM CLASS QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT: •License to practice psychology in Ohio pursuant to Section 4732.09 and 4732.21 of revised code; 12 mos. exp. as a licensed psychologist; 1 course in employee training& development or 3 mos. exp.  •providing work direction & training or supervision to psychology students, assistants, or psychologists.

Do not settle for letting anyone tell you what you can or cannot do, or can or cannot achieve. Employment gaps should not be considered red flags or reflective of an individual's capabilities. I stayed as an inpatient in a mental health hospital for six weeks for complex mental health issues after experiencing a stress-induced psychotic break. Having felt no choice but to hand in my notice to a job in the clinical sector, while dreaming of eventually being a clinical psychologist, I have been told by those in powerful positions that I shouldn’t be in a client-facing role because I’m not “emotionally calibrated” that way. I was told by a consultant just before discharge that for “people like me” I should lower my expectations. My self confidence was at an all time low. Fast forward to three months later: -Accepted as an intern for a clinical psychology programme (acceptance rate was approx 7%) -Work across the clinical psychology, clinical research, marketing and recruitment departments for a mental health charity (we are awesome by the way) -Working with colleagues who are truly understanding, supportive, have a great sense of humour and, moreover, believe in me and what I can offer despite my self doubts -Have the ability to support clients with anxiety and depression using psychotherapeutic intervention techniques -Given the freedom to write a literature review and propose a novel research project to the team -Set up and co-manage the marketing team I may still be looking for paid employment, have no money and classified as homeless, but I’m so proud of how psychologically resilient I have been in the meantime and thankful for the opportunities I am being given from an open minded team. And then we support them on the journey. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙛𝙤𝙧, 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙮𝙚𝙧? For more than 20 years, we've asked this question of every candidate we've interviewed (often the only time they've ever been asked it!), and some strong themes emerge: • Respect • Support • Lifelong learning There's a lovely parallel process here - in psychology, I think a good employer meets clinicians where they're at, helps them to figure out where they are (maybe how they came to get there), where they want to be, and how to get there.
