I've been hearing about A LOT of burnout in clinicians lately. I know it's apparent across industries, but it really does seem to be rife in the mental health space. It's really got me thinking about work and workplaces and clinicians....and here's where I've arrived 😉 Working in the child/adolescent mental health space doesn't have to be hard. It doesn't have to mean burnout and stress. I really believe it is about being satisfied in your role and at your workplace. Because job satisfaction in this industry is about matching the right clinician with the workplace that is best suited to celebrate their strengths. Knowing the values and mission of a workplace is KEY to determining whether or not it's right for you. And if you don't fit with a workplace it's generally not a reflection on you OR the workplace, but that your values are not aligned. So.....if you're interested in learning more about roles at Northern Centre for Child Development and whether our values match yours, please see our ad below. And if we are on the same page - apply! For the right candidate we will shape an employment or contracting role that fits! https://lnkd.in/g8nWDagN

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐩𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞: 𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 Being a therapist requires a wide range of skills and competencies, and one of the most essential is knowing and acknowledging our own limits and expertise. This is where an important aspect of the therapeutic process comes in: referring clients to a therapist who best suits their needs. However, I found myself lacking a strong referral network to share with clients. Another observation is that therapy is one of the few interactions in life where clients share experiences, needs, and concerns beyond the scope of therapy. For example, I’ve had clients who required the services of a lawyer, an NGO worker, a career counselor, or an occupational therapist. At those times, I didn’t have any contacts to share. I realized I could bridge this gap by having a network of professionals ready to connect clients with the appropriate expertise. To address this, I’m planning to create a comprehensive list of professionals. This will include mental health professionals such as counseling and clinical psychologists, I/O psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, and pro-bono therapists. Additionally, I’ll include other professionals like occupational therapists, speech therapists, rehabilitation workers, NGO workers, lawyers, career counselors, and accountants. If you belong to any of these professions and would like to connect, please comment below or DM me, and we can discuss further. If you know someone who might be interested in connecting, feel free to tag them in the comments. #mentalhealth #psychology #therapy #referrals

If universities actually cared about us, they would fix their rampant workplace issues. Everyone has a right to a safe and healthy work environment. But many people face mental health risks at work. According to the World Health Organization, these risks include: • discrimination and exclusion • limited support from colleagues • long, unsocial, or inflexible hours • conflicting home/work demands • violence, harassment, or bullying • job insecurity and inadequate pay • excessive workloads and understaffing • culture that enables negative behaviors • poor investment in career development Sound familiar? 🤔 When my mental health collapsed during my post-doc, I concluded that I was too brittle for academia. If I were "stronger", I could have been a professor. Instead, I had to leave academia as a "failure." But now I see the truth. It was never my fault. It was my environment. It was an incredibly predictable outcome of a unhealthy workplace. I'm not alone. PhDs are tired of destroying their mental health for a career. Because you deserve better than what academia is giving you. You deserve a healthy workplace. You deserve supportive and respectful colleagues. You deserve a manageable workload, reasonable hours, job security, and adequate pay. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be at peace. 💛 #WorldMentalHealthDay P.S. - Any advice for those struggling with their mental health in academia?

I was recently asked, what is your “why” for becoming a licensed clinical mental health counselor and supervisor. This question is a complex and vulnerable question to answer, but I think it’s important to bring awareness to why mental health professionals join the field. As most young adults I did not originally know which direction I wanted my career to go in. I explored sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and criminal justice before I identified my passion in clinical mental health counseling. I always knew that I wanted to help others, however, I was drawn to this field because of my own lived experiences that strengthened my passion to help others with mental health concerns. My lived experience includes exposure to family members with untreated mental health concerns, and substance use disorders that has caused distress and turmoil across our family system. I also experienced the traumatic loss of my mother at the age of 17. My experience and trauma were very difficult to process, however, with professional and natural supports I was able to work through it. My own lived experiences have provided me with a unique understanding of what it’s like being on the other side of services, what it’s like to seek services and struggle to find the “right” fit, and what it’s like to not be heard or have a say in what supports I needed. My experience has had a profound impact on the work that I do. I have strived to learn everything thing I can about mental health and how to support others. I have worked hard to advocate for clients served, and other professionals in the mental health field which led me to becoming a clinical director, trainer, internship coordinator and a clinical supervisor. I have an opportunity to use my education and lived experience to not only serve clients in the community, help professional development of mental health practitioners entering the field, and to enhance the quality of services provided. I love working in mental health, supporting our staff across all service lines, and training new professionals coming into the field. #SPARC #mywhy #mentalhealthawareness #substanceuseawareness #traumainformed #livedexperience
