  • “I forgot to text you back, I’m such a stupid person!” Are you though? Recall the last time you labelled yourself as something, or saw someone else refer to themselves as a single label, in a light that is way more negative than it actually is. Perhaps it was your friend calling themselves ‘ugly’ because they had a pimple on her face, or you, in the sentence above, calling yourself stupid. Do you think this is how it actually is? We’re human, we’re bound to make mistakes. Defining ourselves in the direction of the mistake, however, isn’t right. Moreover, this is commonly referred to as a ‘distorted’ way of thinking, or a ‘cognitive distortion’. One of them is what we see here, wherein we negatively label ourselves and take that judgment to be what the truth is, when in reality, it isn’t. Not only is this thinking untrue, but it also affects our motivations to do what is productive for us. Once we call ourselves stupid, the lingering feelings of guilt loom over our routine, thus hindering the healthy way in which we are usually supposed to function. Stripping these untrue thoughts as soon as they pop into existence is utopian. Gathering an understanding of the nature of these thoughts, and seeing them for what they truly are is the key. An unhealthy way to think breeds an unfriendly environment for one’s wellbeing. When negative thoughts arise, it’s important to challenge them and remind yourself that mistakes are as normal as doing things right and both don’t define your worth. How do you address moments of negative self-talk or irrational self-labeling? Share your strategies or a recent experience in the comments—let’s continue the conversation and support each other in fostering healthier mindsets.

  • When to Consider Finding a New Therapist Therapy is a space for growth, healing, and self-discovery. The relationship you have with your therapist is the cornerstone of this process, but what happens when that relationship doesn’t feel right? Recognizing the signs that it might be time to make a change is an important step in taking charge of your mental health. Here are some key signs to look out for: The Connection Doesn’t Feel Right Your therapist should balance professionalism with empathy. If your sessions feel distant, cold, or overly clinical, it may be difficult to build the trust needed for open conversations. If your therapist is too casual, focusing on personal topics, it can distract from your goals. Therapy should be a safe and focused space for you, not your therapist. You Don’t Feel Heard Listening is at the heart of therapy. A good therapist will give you their undivided attention, let you express yourself fully, and respond thoughtfully. If your therapist interrupts, rushes to offer advice, or seems distracted, it can leave you feeling invalidated. Therapy is a partnership, and your voice should be at the center of every session. There’s No Progress Therapy takes time, but each session should feel like a step no matter how small toward your goals. If you feel stuck or like you’re having the same conversations without change, it might be time for a shift. A good therapist will adjust their approach as needed; if yours isn’t doing so, it’s worth considering a new perspective. The Approach Doesn’t Fit You Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. If your therapist’s strategies, communication style, or analysis style don’t align with your personality or needs, it’s okay to acknowledge that they might not be the right fit. A good therapist will meet you where you are, rather than trying to fit you into a pre-defined framework. Misaligned Values or Boundaries Therapy should always respect your identity, beliefs, and boundaries. If your therapist pushes their own values, judgments, or lifestyle choices onto you, that’s a clear sign of misalignment. The same applies if they fail to respect your boundaries or make you feel uncomfortable with their feedback. Lack of Professionalism or Expertise Therapists should be reliable and focused. Frequent cancellations, tardiness, or distractions during sessions can signal a lack of commitment. If your therapist lacks the expertise for your concerns, find someone with the right knowledge. Why This Matters : Switching therapists can feel overwhelming, but the right fit is critical for progress and healing. Therapy should be a space where you feel empowered, supported, and understood. You deserve a therapist who meets you where you are and helps you move forward. Don’t settle for less. Have you ever felt like your therapist wasn’t the right fit? What'd you do? Share in the comments, you might help someone else take the next step in their journey. 🌈

  • How Do I Find a Good Therapist? Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision. The right therapist for one person might not be the right fit for someone else and that’s okay! Therapy works best when you feel comfortable, safe, and supported. But with so many options out there, how do you even start Here are a few key things to consider when searching for a therapist:- Therapist’s Qualifications Does the therapist have the right credentials, such as degrees or licenses, to provide the support you need? Specialized training and experience can make a significant difference in addressing your concerns effectively. Fees Therapy is an investment in your well-being. Be sure to ask about costs, cancellation policies, and the overall structure of therapy. Will it be short-term or long-term? Getting clarity up front helps you plan and avoid surprises later. Where Therapy Happens Location matters. Think about what setting you’re most comfortable with, would you prefer face-to-face sessions in an office or the convenience of online therapy? Many therapists offer both, so choose what feels best for your lifestyle and preferences. Your Comfort and Connection Perhaps the most important factor is your comfort level. Do you feel at ease with the therapist? Are they someone you trust to listen without judgment? It’s also helpful to know if they have experience working with concerns similar to yours. A strong sense of trust and connection can be the foundation for progress. (Source: APA Div. 12 - Society of Clinical Psychology) Why is this so important? Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. It’s a collaborative and personal process that thrives on trust, understanding, and a good fit between you and your therapist. Taking the time to find the right person ensures you get the most out of your experience. Now it’s Your Turn : If you’ve been to therapy, what helped you choose the right therapist? Was it their expertise, their approach, or something else? Share your insights in the comments—you never know who you might help on their own journey to finding the support they need!

  • “Can’t I just vent and get over it?” You could, but are you getting over the crisis, or just pushing it away? Letting all our feelings out can be a great means of feeling connection, which is enough sometimes. However, when dealing with a crisis situation the pathway that comes after the process can seem unclear. What are you supposed to do after you’ve just vented, but you still feel drained? Well, that is because we didn’t really address our physical or emotional situation in that entire period. Further, it may even escalate the emotions we may be feeling during that event and lead to more unpleasant states. Solely relying on it, and pushing the crisis situation away, will eventually catch up to us. How? Take an example of a small tear in your favourite tshirt, what a disaster! You wrap your jacket around the torn part and keep wearing it because it can’t be seen. But, the tear grows into a slit, which is clearly visible through anything, and you can’t wear it anymore.  Coming to the first part of the instance, what if you had just sewed up the little tear by yourself in that moment, to make do for the time being? You don’t need to be a tailor, but a quick stitch can help for now. That act of threading back the tshirt is similar to how distress tolerance skills work. We don’t look for immediate solutions or for the problem to end completely, only something that can help us cope with the distress in a better way. Once you visit a tailor, they sew your tshirt back together in such a way, which you couldn’t have done by yourself, and you cannot recognize it anymore. The professional touch of a tailor which gave the tshirt the care it needed, is how therapy works, it isn’t a transformational journey of ‘fixing’ yourself, it is an act of taking care of yourself in ways you pathways you did not wish to go alone in. It’s okay to feel drained after venting—that’s your body’s way of asking for more support. As cathartic as venting may be, it needs to be paired with such skills to help one develop tolerance for crises in the long term.  Visit our free Distress Management Course here: https://lnkd.in/gKYRhzps , and feel open to book a 20-minute free consultation call to know a bit more about therapy - rather than just stiches and fabrics :

  • Very often, looking into the grand scheme of things or the bigger picture removes you from seeing anything at all. You can’t have a fresh face of makeup without a primer to set things in place, or a killer workout routine before your warm-up exercise, or a safe mental health space for yourself if you do not know what to do in a moment of distress, and it's completely fine. Say someone pulled an all-nighter for an extremely important presentation due the next day. Going over all the slides, jotting down each possible question somebody could ask and everything in between - they seem to be all set. However, when the time comes to be the showman, you cannot find the pen drive you stored the material on. This creates an ‘Oh My God! What am I going to do now? What have I done?” type of a situation for the person. Even if the pen drive had been in the bag, they may not be able to locate it because there are so many thoughts running in their head at that moment. Nobody chooses the amount of discomfort they’re supposed to feel prior to the occurrence happening in real time. We’re not wizards, although that would make things so much easier. When a door of distress is slammed in front of us, what do you do? It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers right away You understand how your body is reacting to this situation: - How are you feeling at the moment, are you in distress? Rate it from a scale of 0-10 - Is your breathing under your control? - Can you take control of yourself? From this moment, we begin to assess the ways we can calm ourselves down, be it by focusing on your breathing, activating our senses, pushing things away for a little while or just letting it all out by moving your body and dancing like no one’s watching. Getting back to momentum through these small, simple activities is what provides us the strength to take the next step. It can be battling with the problem in a way to smooth it over in the long run, or whatever healthy path you choose to take forward, everything is your choice in this. Just like small walks can turn into a marathon someday, a method of distress tolerance can turn into a healthier headspace in the long run.

  • Picture this - You’ve chosen to seek help for your mental health. With numerous websites to browse through, and different offer plans to scroll, you seem to be left with a lot of options- but things don’t seem so clear even though the resources are right there. Just like we may need more information at a grocery store to pick the freshest produce, we often need more information when navigating our mental health options. But, what do you do when it comes to trying out therapy, or other mental well-being options for yourself? While grocery stores feel ordinary, therapy lobbies are often misunderstood as unnecessary or indulgent, making some hesitant to seek help due to fears of being judged or doubts about its effectiveness. All the phrases that were just mentioned with close contextualization to therapy have been proven scientifically to be some of the most common myths as per Cornell’s Research Program on Self Injury and Recovery. However, the questions remain, don’t they? How are you supposed to know if everything is confidential? Is it off-limits to swear in front of your therapist? Well, such inquiries are sure to be on the rise when it comes to the initial step of starting one’s healing journey. To guide one through such a long, vast terrain, a small map to help you find your way is needed. Having a short conversation with a professional is essential not only to understand our mental health needs but also to ensure we feel comfortable and connect well with the therapist, making it easier to move forward. - that is, if we vibe for the long ride! For the same purpose, My Mental Health School is offering a 20-minute free consultation call to people wishing to take the first step. This conversation provides you with a safe space to ask questions and get clarity on how therapy could support your journey.
