Day in the Life of a Therapist: The Role of Supervision 🌟🧠 Today is a supervision day, and it’s one of my favourite parts of being a psychologist. As a Board Approved Supervisor through the Psychology Board of Australia, I’ve spent the past decade supporting psychologists in training and practice, accumulating countless hours of supervision. It’s a role that’s both humbling and rewarding. 🌿✨ Supervision isn’t just about case discussions or meeting requirements—it’s about fostering reflection, growth, and confidence. Over the years, I’ve drawn on several supervision models, tailoring my approach to meet the needs of each supervisee. Here are a few key elements I focus on: 🧠 Reflection: Encouraging supervisees to think critically about their work, their approaches, and the client-therapist relationship. Models like the Seven-Eyed Supervision Model have been particularly useful for this. 💬 Feedback: Providing constructive and supportive feedback that helps psychologists build their skills and confidence. 🌟 Professional Identity: Helping supervisees navigate the complexities of their role, from ethical dilemmas to finding their therapeutic 'voice'. 🌱 Wellbeing: Supervision isn’t just about professional growth—it’s also a space to explore how therapists can care for themselves in this demanding but meaningful work. Supervision days remind me of the ripple effect of this work. Supporting one psychologist means indirectly supporting countless clients they’ll go on to help. In my years of teaching Organisational Behaviour, one glaring gap I've noticed is the inadequate exploration of topics such as mobbing, unethical workplace behaviour, and abuse of power by authorities. While the literature heavily emphasises aspects like personality, job satisfaction, work design, and leadership development, it often falls short in addressing prevalent issues like abusive authority and workplace mobbing. This oversight is particularly concerning given that many researchers, including research higher degree candidates, have reported experiences of enduring years of power misuse within academic institutions. I myself am familiar with such realities, having witnessed and been aware of PhD candidates in regional universities facing distress and anxiety due to abuse of power by individuals in higher management roles. Beyond classroom teachings and case studies, it's crucial to raise awareness and discuss how to prioritise psychological safety, internal audits, and preventive measures against mobbing in academic and corporate environments alike. The excerpt from a Mental Health Survey underscores this point, revealing the reluctance of individuals to report serious issues due to various reasons. As one survey participant, a post-doctoral researcher, puts it: "Punish supervisors who bully their staff rather than forcing the staff who are bullied to leave. Too many bullies are allowed to remain in academia, ruining people’s careers and lives." - CACTUS Mental Health Survey. In my humble opinion, it's not solely supervisors who contribute to an unhealthy environment, although reports suggest some do. Rather, it's those in charge of research departments, heads of schools, and individuals with strong authoritative positions who often orchestrate different forms of abuse behind the scenes. It's vital for the literature and research in organisational behaviour to focus on these aspects, informing policy decisions and workplace behaviour protocols to prevent systematic abuse of power, especially in research environments. I am afraid of my Supervisor, what do I do? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 is that even the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 with an MPhil or a PsyD have had 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 in their professional journey 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 and offered nothing to them what a supervision space was expected to serve. I include myself on this list. 🍃 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: ❌ Supervision is NOT didactic. ❌ Supervision is NOT autocratic and authoritarian. ❌ Supervision is NOT ‘supposed to’ be threatening to say the least. Four reasons why group supervision is for 𝘆𝗼𝘂: 1. 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁: If you are someone who sees clients in private practice, isolation and being on your own can bring it’s shares of challenges. Disconnection from the professional community can be extremely daunting and group supervision offers a space to fill that gap. 2. 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: As psychologists, we thrive on the observing and learning of the nuances our work involves. Seeing your supervisor in action hold the sentiments of the group, build rapport, create a safe space for both the clinical and the person-hood of the many therapists, itself is an experience which offers rich learning. 3. 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: In addition to tending to isolation, networking with like-minded psychologists is a great way to build connections, foster learning informally, outside group supervision and discuss therapist victories and struggles and create a referral system. 4. 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: I’ve had supervisees who attend group supervision just for the experience and mere learning opportunity the group format offers. Group supervision offers a shared learning space, where everyone’s perspectives, therapist parts are welcomed. Dear Mental Health Practitioners, When I start the Peer Supervision group in PLS community, also as a Peer Support for early-career therapists with Shailja Garg initiating it , our aim was to create a supportive group for growth, learning, and shared guidance through biweekly meetings or connect with peers whenever available as feeling doubtful or stuck before session .Peer supervision in this context was an informal process of connecting, learning from one another, and sometimes practicing skills through roleplay, and sometimes all under the facilitation of trained professionals with over five years of experience. I may be mistaken, I am seeing many people opting this idea recently but charging for it. Some therapist may be misunderstanding the purpose of formal peer supervision and starting paid peer supervision. While seeking support and collaboration is crucial, charging fees for peer supervision services—especially with only you having a few years of experience—is inappropriate and ethically questionable. If you have only 2-3 years of experience, please reconsider offering paid peer supervision. Peer supervision is meant to be a collaborative process where professionals support each other as equals, rather than adopting a supervisory role if you are charging. Charging for this service does not align with its intended purpose In many cases, peer supervision itself is best conducted under the guidance of a more experienced supervisor. Please reflect on your current practices, our field already has no regulation body for the counseling field in india, it's our job to do it by being informed. While I understand the value of having a proper education, there is inherent bias when individuals without lived experience assume they can offer the same services as those with lived experience. Opening up and sharing my experiences often left classically trained professionals traumatized, with reactions ranging from pity to horror to disgust. Many counselors, therapists, and even pastors have expressed feeling ill-equipped to address the level of trauma I endured. This challenge persists today, as peers still struggle to find trauma-informed and person-centered professional services. I have volunteered and worked in both direct and indirect support roles since 2008. The field has grown significantly, and the landscape of healing improves when trauma-informed services are integrated with diversity, equity, and inclusive practices to develop person-centered systems of care. Holistic health systems must take into account the social determinants of health to truly support and empower individuals on their journey to recovery and wellness. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
