Are AP/Psychologist Roles in Ireland Just a Mirage? Over the past several months, I've been actively applying for the very few Assistant Psychologist and Psychologist positions available in Ireland. The limited number of roles is already a significant hurdle, but even when opportunities do arise, the application process has been incredibly frustrating. Despite submitting numerous tailored CVs and cover letters, I’ve rarely progressed beyond the initial application stage. Even after applying multiple times to the same role with different CVs with different names and experiences, I’ve found myself stuck in the same place—without an interview, let alone a chance to advance to the second stage. This raises serious concerns: Are these positions truly available, or is the hiring process more of a formality? Is there something deeper at play, such as fulfilling regulatory requirements or maintaining visibility, without any real intention of filling these roles? Adding to the frustration is the fact that many of these roles are narrowly focused on candidates with specific clinical, counseling, or educational psychology backgrounds. This narrow focus often disregards the value of other specializations and experiences, even when they are directly relevant to the role. It feels as though organizations are missing out on the diverse skills and perspectives that could enhance their teams and ultimately benefit those they serve. As someone deeply committed to the field of mental health, it’s incredibly disheartening to encounter such barriers—especially when the opportunities are so few to begin with. I know I’m not alone; many of my peers and colleagues have experienced and still experiencing similar roadblocks either in Ireland or elsewhere. It’s time we had an open and honest conversation about the reality of these roles. With so few opportunities available, shouldn’t the hiring process be more inclusive of diverse backgrounds and specializations? Are the roles being advertised truly reflective of the demand in the field of psychology in Ireland, or is there a disconnect between what’s posted and what’s actually available? Let’s bring these issues to light and work together to advocate for a more transparent, inclusive, and fair hiring process in our field. Is sending job coaches into psychiatric wards really the answer? I know this new government is all about change but are we digging just a bit too deep with some of these proposals ? Hear me out The UK governments recent proposal to place job coaches in psychiatric wards to SAVE on disability benefits and HELP patients back to work is raising eyebrows & for good reason 🧐 Here are some key points worth considering 👉 Psychiatric wards are for complex care, not job readiness 👉 Many patients already have careers, they just need time, treatment, and support from medical professionals, not career advisors 👉 The idea that a job coach can snap someone out of a psychotic episode or deep mental distress is not only unrealistic , it’s quite dismissive of the real challenges that are being faced 👉 Imagine being in the middle of a psychotic episode and someone coming in to talk about your “career pathway” Like fook off 😵💫 It’s dismissive of the reality these patients face 😅 I mean I’m laughing because it’s just ridiculous thinking 👉 Investing in mental health infrastructure and providing adequate treatment should come before any focus on employment, surely looking after yourself and being well comes first 🤷♀️ 👉 Long term solutions should focus on creating sustainable jobs and programmes that help people back into work after they’ve fully recovered NOT while they’re still in the midst of treatment I know this will be a topic that is up for debate 🍿 👀 So I’m here for the comments But surely instead of trying to quick fix crisis maybe we should be putting that time effort and money more into the preventative 🤷♀️ I mean who even comes up with these proposals Get me in on your discussions UK government I can point out the obvious rather well #justsaying 🤷♀️ What’s your thoughts on this thought provoking Thursday Do you think this approach is a short-sighted “quick fix”?
