« He who knows only England does not know England." - Rudyard Kipling I particularly appreciate a small reflective ingredient at the heart of one of our exercises: comparing ourselves to the organization of the Marines (USA military corps). Especially ☝️ when the participants' culture, a priori, is far from a particular interest in the military… This is where the exercise becomes most enriching. What do we do? We quickly learn things about the organization of the Marines, either in depth or at a glance, or by filtering what suits us to say things that we would find more difficult or less clear to express without the pretext of these learnings about Marines. **How are we like the Marines? **How are we not like the Marines? **How would we like to be like the Marines? **How would we not like to be like the Marines? This concerns only a subgroup among others, but the feedback in the plenary session is always very interesting. (Spoiler alert: it almost never talks about the Marines anymore, and when the Marines are mentioned, it is to say something more easily by attributing it to the Marines.) This general module, in which we use this gem, is found in many of our customized session agendas. And we also have a pleasant and motivating (non-challenging) version in one of the exercises of REGROUP, our well-done team building.

Are you curious about what earning your #submarine dolphins is like? Below is another great video from the US Navy and Dr. Robert Roncska (USS TEXAS) about what it is like directly from the Sailors. Although the video explains it well, it is tough to realize what it truly means unless you go through the process. If you want to try, RADM Jim Waters can help you join the Navy! Submarine Duty can be incredibly challenging at times…and then there are moments like this that are divine and priceless! Many don’t realize that the submarine warfare insignia, our hard-earned badge that distinguishes and identifies our tribe of “qualified submariners”, is referred to as dolphins. I still remember having to memorize this insignia at OCS: It was a bow view of a submarine, proceeding on the surface, with bow planes rigged for diving, flanked by dolphins in a horizontal position with their heads resting on the upper edge of the bow planes.

From my post yesterday, everyone had fond memories about the dolphins that rode the bow wake on the submarine. So I thought I would show a good video of it so everyone can enjoy it. OTD December 7, 1941, the Japanese surprise attacked our naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, launching us into WWII. With the 83rd anniversary of the Japanese attack, I was re-reading this fascinating article I found a few years ago you may find interesting. "Japanese Naval Preparations for World War ll" by Japanese Rear Admiral Yôichi Hirama. This article was published in U.S. Naval War College Review Spring 1991. So many important take aways for us WWII Pacific history readers and those watching what's happening in the Pacific, etc. today. #WorthKnowing A few key take aways: According to this article*: "The Japanese navy began to officially regard the U.S. Navy as its potential enemy with the establishment of the Imperial Defense Policy of 1907." "It is often said that the surprise attack on Hawaii was conceived by Yamamoto Isoroku, but such an attack was in the tradition of the navy. The idea of a surprise strike on Pearl Harbor was taken up in map exercises at the naval staff college as early as 1927." Why were Saipan, Guam and Peleliu so brutal? It was part of the Japanese "Absolute Defense Sphere." "After defeat at Midway and Guadalcanal, Imperial General Headquarters decided on a new policy of operations. On 30 September 1943, some five months after Yamamoto 's death, it determined that the entire strength of the navy should be devoted to the defense of a line connecting the Kuriles, Marianas and West Carolines. Everything within this line became the "absolute defense sphere," and the navy shifted its strategic focus to essentially defensive interception-attrition operations to preserve it. Starting in early 1944 the navy deployed over 1 ,500 land-based naval aircraft to its various bases in Micronesia. They were to comprise the "unsinkable aircraft carrier" in the coming decisive battle against the U.S. Navy..." *Hirama, Yôichi. “Japanese Naval Preparations for World War Ll.” Naval War College Review 44, no. 2 (1991): 63–81. https://lnkd.in/eFHNyu7Y. #WWIIhistory #WWIIPacific #RememberPearlHarbor 🇺🇸 Interested in learning more? I get the question sometimes: where do you store your food on a submarine for an extended deployment? It's easy - you put it in the passageway and walk on it. Then you eat yourself out!! 😀 Infrastructure Masons Compass Datacenters Build Submarines United States Submarine Veterans Naval Submarine League US Navy Navy League of the United States #Veterans #veteransupport #veteranshelpingveterans

I answered so many questions about submarine operations this week via DM that I wanted to start a video series in which curious people can ask submariners from all nations questions. I started with a '70s video about how to conduct an underhull because it explains everything well. Part 1 is a video with an MPA report sent to a patrolling sub! What questions do you have to start? Growing up in the Marine Corps, one battle undeniably reflected our strong culture: The Battle of Iwo Jima. This morning, I shared a bit about this historic World War II battle and the powerful leadership lessons learned there with a fellow Marine and Echelon Front Instructor, Rob Jones. The Battle of Iwo Jima is encapsulated in the famous photo, but there’s a reason the picture is so notorious. It tells the story of Marines, who put the flag there as a sign of their dedication to their country and determination to complete the mission. This is how you create culture. The men on that island spent 36 days fighting a determined enemy force. Approximately 6800 Marines lost their lives during the Battle Of Iwo Jima. The picture, however, became an everlasting symbol of who we are as Marines - proudly dedicated to fighting for our brothers and country. In order to create culture, you have to propagate the story of where your organization came from. The Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal, famously remarked on the significance of Iwo Jima by saying, "The flag-raising on Iwo Jima means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years." This quote underscores the importance of the battle and the enduring legacy it would have on the Marine Corps. #marines #militaryhistory #culture #battleofiwojima #leadership #extremeownership
