After a distressing incident at work led to the discovery of a mass in her brain, WNYC Radio host Alison Stewart turned to neurosurgeon Dr. Randy D'Amico. Through an awake brain surgery using personalized brain mapping technology, Dr. D'Amico and Dr. John Boockvar carefully removed the mass, which they learned was abscess caused by an infection, all while preserving her speech and motor functions. At 31 years old, Garanfil received news that no one is prepared for—stage 2 breast cancer. To add to her shock, she also learned she was BRCA positive, meaning there was an even higher risk of her developing breast cancer a second time. With the support and expertise of her care team, including Paul Baron, MD, and Wojciech Dec, MD, Garanfil explored every treatment option—like whether to have just the cancerous tissue removed or undergo a double mastectomy—and chose the the path that felt right to her.
