To close out our 2024 #NYPYearInReview, we’re looking back at a moment of quick action and extraordinary service. On a quiet July morning, security officer Rubere Raffoul was alerted to a woman in labor in the back seat of a car outside #NYPAllen. Without hesitation, he stepped in to assist, helping deliver Leonela Valdez’s healthy 7-pound, 7-ounce baby girl and ensuring both mom and baby were safely brought into the hospital. Tap the link to read more about Raffoul’s heroism and thanks for following along as we revisited some favorite moments from the past year! https://nyphosp.co/40ePk68 Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

As we look back on this year’s milestones for our #NYPYearInReview, we are filled with gratitude for our #NICU care teams who make #Halloween special for our tiniest patients and their families. With their help, these little fighters celebrated their very first #Halloween dressed as adorable ketchup-and-mustard twins and ferociously cute animals, bringing smiles to their families’ faces and creating lasting memories. A big thank you to the #NYP NICU teams! Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

#NYP patient Anthony Pecorella was given the chance to live every baseball fan’s dream when he threw out the first pitch at Citi Field this summer, with the help of our partners, the New York Mets. Anthony, who is cancer-free following successful treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, was honored by the team alongside his pediatric oncologist, #NYPWeillCornell’s Dr. Lisa Roth. Show your support for Anthony in the comments and keep following our #NYPYearInReview for more memorable moments! Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

For our #NYPYearInReview, we’re looking back at the special moment when nurse Deborah Acevedo’s colleagues surprised her with a retirement celebration, honoring her 45-year career at #NYP. Deborah made a lasting impact during her time as a nurse in #NYPMorganStanley’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she helped develop the Cuddler Program that recruits volunteers to hold and comfort the babies, and later as a Community Outreach Clinical Coordinator for the #NYP Ambulatory Care Network. As we count down to the #NewYear, #NYP is looking back at some of our favorite moments from 2024! Our hearts were warmed by the story of Ethan and Allen Besas, twin brothers with an unbreakable bond. When Ethan, a nurse at #NYPWeillCornell, needed a liver transplant after years of battling a rare condition, Allen didn’t hesitate to donate part of his liver to save his brother’s life. In January 2023, the twins had their surgeries at #NYPColumbia and celebrated their recovery with a dance party with their care team and family. Follow our #NYPYearInReview all week as we revisit more amazing moments from 2024! Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Tommy John surgery, a revolutionary orthopedic surgery that helps baseball pitchers recover from injuries that were once considered career-ending. Dr. Christopher Ahmad, chief of sports medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia and team physician for the New York Yankees, has been working for over 30 years to elevate the success of this surgery, which repairs a torn ligament in the elbow. On #NYPAdvances, he discusses how the evolution of baseball has demanded improvements to the procedure and the latest surgical development, the Triple Tommy John, that has the potential to improve outcomes for athletes. https://nyphosp.co/3VReKEf Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

When new parents Brianna and Adam Nuñez came home from the hospital with their son, Mateo, in August 2021, he seemed perfectly healthy. But at 11 weeks old, Mateo turned blue in Brianna’s arms and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors discovered a tumor the size of an orange growing in his chest, compressing his heart, left lung, and airway; the cause was a rare cancer called neuroblastoma. Mateo was transferred to NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital for specialized care, led by #NYPMorganStanley physicians Dr. Darrell Yamashiro, pediatric oncologist and hematologist, and Dr. Erica Fallon, director of pediatric surgical oncology. “I’ve seen many neuroblastoma cases, and Mateo’s was one of the direst that we have seen,” says Dr. Yamashiro. Mateo required urgent chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and later surgery to remove what remained. His long treatment journey included an 88-day stay in the hospital, and there were times when Brianna and Adam weren’t sure what tomorrow would bring. Now 3, Mateo has been cancer-free for two years. “We’re just very thankful for NewYork-Presbyterian,” says Brianna. “We call him Miracle Mateo because he is truly a miracle.” Learn more about Mateo’s journey and how his care team approached his treatment: https://nyphosp.co/4iJLQ2N Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine
