Bring on the mushrooms!!! After much planning and collective effort we are growing and selling mushrooms in the cellar of the City Farmhouse in C103. First up are Blue Oyster mushrooms and more varieties to follow in the New Year including workshops and opportunities to get involved so keep an eye on our socials and newsletter. If you are local and stuck for Christmas presents we have a limited number of grow your own Blue Oyster kits packed in handmade recycled hessian coffee bags made by local people for sale and collection this week- https://lnkd.in/eN5Bkeij Many hundreds of volunteer hours went into making this space what it is now. The kitchen and shelving is reclaimed from a ship thanks to Babcock International Group, the steel was sandblasted back in kind by KAEFER and Plymouth City Council UK Shared Prosperity Funding meant we could secure planning permission and employ a site manager to get this going. Last week we hosted our first Data & Stories Day with Plymouth Octopus (POP). The room was filled with community organisations, health, housing, planning, data, community safety specialists alongside academics and our local Councillor Alison Raynsford. Really rich and thoughtful discussions took place after hearing about how data is used in health settings, how stories are collected by Belong In Plymouth and how Stonehouse Community Builders listen to local people. Nudge put crime, transport, empty building and health data out on the street in really creative ways - experiencing the data in this visual way in situ prompted a wide range of reactions, reflections and conversations about the power of data, the risks, benefits and care that is needed to share data with in communities and how it can be used to raise awareness, sign post and connect people. Very much a start of collaborating together with services, sharing experiences and understanding how data is used to make decisions in good and not so good ways. More on this next year as we host events for local people and build on these connections. So watch this space! Winter Lights! Last week we had a switch on for all the gorgeous handmade decorations and lights made by local people that we put up all along the street. Many were themed for the business from the laundrette, tattoo shop and Cabinet Supplies. With 30 businesses joining in and more to come - we think this is the start of something! This is a partnership with the Stonehouse Community Builders Isatta Kallon Helen Moore Four Greens Community Trust supported by sponsorship from Millfields Trust & Millfields Inspired Cafe Momus, Joedy Lawrence and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund Plymouth City Council. This Thursday businesses along Union Street will be turning lights on along the street to brighten up the winter months. It is the first time we've tried something like this - we're using what we can borrow, reuse and make. This is in response to people wanting more of the street party vibe through the winter, saying they don't feel safe at night and local businesses asking for more support through tough times so we joined forces with Four Greens Community Trust Community Builders to it happen. Join us to walk along the street and check out the difference a community can make. Hope to see you there! We'll start at Union Corner, walk up to Millfields Trust and the Scrapstore and then all the way along the street down to The Depo and back to Union Corner for warm drinks and music.
