  • A New Year and a Call to Action for Community Power As we celebrate securing Coalville CAN HQ for our community, we can’t help thinking, what next?. This £250,000 grant is more than just a gift—it’s a signal that community ownership works. It frees us from debt, empowers local people, and ensures that spaces like ours remain at the heart of our towns. But this is just the beginning. What other buildings could become community-owned in 2025? Across the country, vital spaces are at risk of being sold off by Councils and others, often to private developers with little regard for their local importance. These are spaces that could—and should—belong to the people. The future could be bright if our communities are trusted to take the lead. Where will the money come from? The Community Ownership Fund has shown it can work, but we need more than sporadic announcements. Devolution must be more than words—it must empower communities with the resources and autonomy to make decisions for themselves. Through campaigns like We're Right Here , we’re pushing for real community power. The campaign champions giving communities the legal right to own assets and the support they need to turn those rights into realities. This isn’t about waiting for permission—it’s about saying loud and clear: we can do this! At Coalville CAN, we’ve proved that communities can rise to the challenge. We’ve worked hard, faced ups and downs, and emerged stronger. Now, we're asking: What buildings in your community would you fight to save? What spaces matter most to your people? Let 2025 be the year to make a real difference. Together, we can show that trusting communities isn’t a risk—it’s the best investment that could be made. Thankyou to everyone that's supported us in our share offer on 2024, to World Habitat for being a patient and ethical landlord letting us occupy the building paying an affordable rent while we raised the funds to buy it and to the fantastic Christmas present that's been the icing on the cake! While others may say we can’t, we say Coalville CAN and you CAN too! #CoalvilleCAN #CommunityOwnership #We’reRightHere #DevolutionDoneRight #CommunityPower Jon Alexander Nudge Community Builders Sam Conniff Dr Jess Steele, OBE Rebecca Trevalyan Naomi Rubbra Gill Wildman, PhD Imandeep Kaur Hannah Sloggett Hazel Sheffield

  • We are thrilled to share another milestone on our journey! After years of hard work, setbacks, a successful community share offer and even taking out loans, we have managed to pull together the funds to purchase our building from World Habitat We are incredibly grateful to them for being such a patient and supportive landlord throughout this process. This is about so much more than a building—it’s about the transformative power of community. Spaces like CAN HQ have an immeasurable impact on people’s lives. In addition to welcoming senior staff from World Habitat and their Chair we were also honored to host the Association of Camerados and their Ripple Effect Impact Mapper Sam Moon who shared how deeply inspired they were by the stories they heard whilst at the same time had singing and celebrations from Century Theatre Academy and supporters. (pics in comments) But it shouldn’t be this hard for communities to take ownership of the places that matter to them. That’s why we’re campaigning for community ownership through We're Right Here . It’s great to see the community right-to-buy agenda gaining traction, and we’re proud to be part of this movement for change. Here’s to a future where communities have the power to shape their own spaces! #CommunityOwnership #CampaignForChange #CANHQ #WereRightHere #WorldHabitat https://lnkd.in/eZSKswYW

  • 📣 Help Us Turn the Tide: Invest in Our Community Vision! To all our supporters and change-makers: Now is your moment to make a real difference! Our mission to purchase CAN HQ, the building opposite the iconic Clock Tower on Memorial Square, has faced an unexpected challenge. North West Leicestershire District Council recently withdrew their committed £80,000 funding contribution. But we’re not giving up. Instead, we’ve secured a loan to cover the shortfall — though it comes with an 8% interest rate, adding financial pressure to a project that’s all about community, not profit. 💡 Here’s where you come in: By investing in our Community Share Offer, you can help us reduce this financial burden and bring this community-driven vision to life. Together, we can ensure that CAN HQ becomes a thriving space for everyone in our area. Missed your chance to invest earlier? Now’s the time to step up and be part of something transformative! Let’s show what’s possible when a community comes together. 🌟 note.. all Investments over £1,000 earn 4% interest. Donations makes a difference too, especially with our charitable tax status.
