Local government is scouting locations for a ‘Station F-style’ hub in Dublin. Amazing, right? Wrong. Local founders and investors say they don’t want a national tech incubator. Here’s why. Many cite a general lack of understanding from government when it comes to the startup ecosystem. And there’s also a real hangover from the failure of Media Labs Europe in 2000 too. Other concerns include: ∙ Critique of a “build it and they will come attitude” ∙ Debate on the role of state bodies in the project ∙ It being a vanity project, rather than one for startups My two cents – we’ve got a terminology issue here. Not the government vs. ecosystem showdown that's reported. Should the government launch a national tech incubator? No. Not at least what we consider as an incubator today. But a Startup Campus? Without a doubt. And maybe their role isn’t to lead it, but in this model, government plays a more important role than people realize. Let me explain. The sweet spot is in an approach where bottom-up meets top-down. Government and the private sector joining forces to create an iconic, nationally significant hub for the tech sector. This requires bringing together a group with the expertise to design, build, and manage this kind of innovation-focused real estate product for the long term. And there’s a lot that you can get wrong when doing that, especially with folks who have misaligned interests or have not done it before. A player like Dogpatch Labs in the mix will be key. And the Station F reference? I get it. But it’s misplaced. The comparison here is so tricky because, frankly, you won’t find a funding source like Xavier Niel. This is key. And it’s where the terminology is getting all mixed up. The government shouldn’t directly fund startups like an incubator does. Instead, it should fund (or subsidize) the development costs for a project like this at a scale that actually moves the needle. It should also help unlock the right off-market location to make a project like this viable. Anyway, lots to unpack here. Exciting things happen when you collaborate. It was great to welcome Baroness Jones, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Future Digital Economy to the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter which will become the heart of the City's tech and innovation ecosystem. It will combine cutting edge research, technological innovation, digital startups and world-class facilities to create a global tech sector with human soul. The visit started at Enterprise Wharf, Bruntwood SciTech's state of the art new smart-enabled building which is set to become the home of our region's brightest entrepreneurs and most ambitious scale ups. Rob Valentine, Joanna Birch, Steve Bowyer, Sharon Thompson, JP and Luke Southan expertly brought to life the Knowledge Quarter (Investment Zone) plans which are set to further transform the region. We then went over to the amazing STEAMhouse and saw how it's being used to harness the next generation of startups and scale ups. The most exciting thing is what will be added to the Knowledge Quarter over the coming years... new labs, accelerators, incubators, offices and facilities to unlock growth. #knowledgequarter #transformation #investmentzone

London Tech Week has been a strong showcase for UK innovation - even though all funding metrics are down significantly since a mid-pandemic investment peak in early 2021. London may lack the scaleup growth capital available in the US, as a startup ecosystem it is up there with the best, according to Startup Genome, which analyses the relative strength of global tech hubs. London is tied in second place (with New York) behind Silicon Valley. Tech Nation Rising Stars saw early-stage UK firms pitch and it was interesting to see what the judges were drawn to: ❤️ Passion: A personal desire that drives the founder, clear demonstration of the ‘why’ that will inspire others 🦄 Ambition: Belief that the business can become a unicorn, clarity of the scale of the problem, and the potential prize 🚀 Traction: proof of product/ market fit, plans for growth and clear sense of route to market ⚔️ Moat: uniqueness of proposition and focus, barriers to others entering the category and evidence of proprietary IP 💷 Revenue: credibility on finances, awareness of what impacts the cost base, and validity of business model Most founders ticked most boxes, and all presented decent cases for investment. But it was notable that the winners were those who had a compelling story as to how they would tackle a major social problem. And as former winner Anthony Rose pointed out, VCs play a numbers game - if one “hit” pays for nine misses they’re less interested in startups that don’t look like unicorns in waiting. This suggests “constructive disruptor” founders are more likely to attract the attention, build the community and generate the funding they need to achieve their goals. 💡 What really makes the current Australian Tech startup space different from the past? Hear it from the legend Alan Jones himself. ➡️ This industry survived during the COVID-19 lockdown as it could still operate effectively over online meetings, which never seemed like a reality in the past. And this was one of the biggest points of difference for the Tech startups over others. People stopped commuting to their workplace but were still closely connected to the Tech startup space through online channels. ➡️ That's the reason why this industry has started to become more regionalized rather than just focus on the top cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. ➡️ And because of the hybrid style of working in Tech startups, the proximity between Silicon Valley and Australian startups has also reduced. They are more connected to each other. And this has also enabled better knowledge and skill sharing amongst the startup communities globally ➡️ Alan also shared his experience of closely working with Startmate on one of the laser-focused goals- "To bring Australian Tech startups in the limelight of Silicon Valley". #Brisbane officially ranked in top 40 emerging ecosystems globally 🚀 #GSER2024 Exciting news from the launch of London Tech Week this week: Brisbane is now in the top 40 emerging startup ecosystems in the world. Start Genome released its annual report on the state of startup ecosystems worldwide, in which it analysed 4.5 million startups across 300 global ecosystems. Here are a few Brisbane startup stats over the past two years: - Total startup ecosystem value - $10.8b - Ecosystem value growth compared with prior 2y period - 81% - Early stage funding - $410m - Median Seed round - $775k - Median Series A - $5.5m - Total VC funding - $1.8b What does this mean for the executive tech talent roles in Brisbane, and further across Australia?
