I don’t think relying on technology is the answer, and that we should go back to trusting the young NCOs we place in demanding recruiting roles.

I love this post from Patagonia. It’s been fascinating to observe how buying trends in the outdoor industry have evolved since I started in 2015. One significant issue affecting apparel sales is climate change. For instance, we’re not experiencing cold weather until mid-December in a lot of areas in the US, while winter apparel has been on store racks since October. By the time the holidays arrive, we’re faced with Black Friday deals (which Patagonia doesn’t participate in woohoo!), leaving retailers with reduced margins on inventory they invested in a year ago. The long lead times for apparel—often planned a year in advance—pose a considerable gamble, and many retailers find it a risky endeavor. If they opt to wait for in-season buying, they often miss out on the best-selling styles, which have already sold out in preseason. This raises a crucial question: what will retailers do to adapt, and how can we support their success in this unpredictable climate? These are the important conversations we need to continue having as we navigate these challenges together.
