In echoing the insightful analysis presented, it’s clear that Owen West’s call for leveraging the seasoned insights of senior officers in the recruitment strategy marks a pivotal step towards revitalizing our approach to finding and nurturing the next generation of service members. His recommendations shed light on the critical need for a more nuanced and experienced-based approach in navigating the challenges of military recruitment. What stands out is the emphasis on the potential consequences of overlooking the wealth of experience held by senior officers vice relying on an electronic system like Genesis that made the recruiting mission even more difficult. This not only underscores the importance of inclusive dialogue within the Department of Defense but also prompts a broader discussion on how we can more effectively bridge the gap between strategic decision-making and operational expertise. Could the integration of these tools, alongside the invaluable experience of our senior officers, create a more dynamic and responsive recruitment framework? Addressing the evolving expectations and values of potential recruits is crucial. As societal norms shift, so too must our approach to engagement and communication. What measures can be implemented to ensure that the military remains an attractive and viable career path for young people today? I don’t think relying on technology is the answer, and that we should go back to trusting the young NCOs we place in demanding recruiting roles.

Owen West provides sound reasonable recommendations to increase the pool of qualified applicants for all the services. This is a tale of what happens when OSD officials do not listen to senior officers with decades of experience.
