Have you read the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB)'s "Glasses for All: Improving Supply to the Poorest" report? Published back in February, the report details how a broken market denies more than a billion people access to the eyeglasses they need. Many people in low- and middle-income countries lack glasses due to low awareness and shortage of optometrists. But many simply cannot afford eyeglasses because of how they are produced, sold, and regulated. These are the key issues: 📑 Outdated regulations: Strict rules on who can prescribe and sell glasses translate to higher costs and lower availability. The report suggests trained technicians could handle simple cases, potentially reaching 80% of the underserved! ⛓️ Fragmented supply chain: Lack of competition, inefficient distribution, and high import tariffs make glasses expensive. We need to leverage the entrepreneurial spirit of the informal sector, optimize distribution networks, and reduce import barriers to drive down prices. 💲Limited entrepreneurial support: Small businesses in low-income countries lack financing and resources to expand their operations. NGOs and governments need to step up with support. By solving these supply-side problems, we can create a consumer-oriented market for glasses, ensuring everyone can enjoy clear vision and a better life. Save the date! Join us on Wednesday, February 5 for our annual Vision and Road Safety Conference (VARS)! We are once again co-hosting with India Vision Institute, Sightsavers India and Mission for Vision to raise awareness about the critical role that clear vision plays in road safety. Join us to advocate for policy reform, encourage multi-sector cooperation, and increase access to eye health services. Poor vision is linked to 59% of vehicle crashes. One easy, quick, and effective way to address this is to ensure that drivers have the eyeglasses they need to see clearly. Mark your calendars now, and stay tuned for the link to register. #India #Road #Safety #Transport

Today is Universal Health Coverage Day! As the World Health Organization notes, "Health for all is a pre-requisite to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Despite numerous high-level political commitments to achieve UHC by 2030, over half of the world’s population still has no access to essential health services." And in the global movement for health for all, we want to ensure eye care is included. Eye health can often be overlooked, yet uncorrected blurry vision can significantly affect a person's quality of life, productivity, and income earning potential. #UHC #SocialImpact #HealthForAll

Thanks again to the World Economic Forum for producing this 2-minute video about our THRIVE Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)! Conducted by BRAC, Queen's University Belfast, and VisionSpring in rural Bangladesh, THRIVE was the first-ever RCT to link eyeglasses and income. It found that a simple pair of reading glasses can boost median monthly incomes by 33.4%. #Bangladesh #Eye #Health #Income #SocialEntrepreneurship
Globally, 1 billion people do not have the glasses they need. Adequate #healthcare access can have many benefits beyond our physical well-being, and employers can play a huge role in supporting access. We love World Sight Day! In the lead up to this year's World Sight Day, we screened the vision of more than 350,000 people and and helped more than 100,000 children and working adults to see clearly through eyeglasses. Whether it's boosting productivity and safety at the workplace or helping kids thrive at school, eyeglasses can radically transform people's lives. As we close out yet another successful year of clear vision, impact, and advocacy, we're already getting excited for next year's World Sight Day on October 9, 2025. But in the meantime, we have a question for you. When was the last time you checked your eyes? #WSD2024 #LoveYourEyes #Eye #Health #SocialEntrepreneurship

Meet Rukayat Abdullahi, a 43-year-old teacher from Nigeria. Her deteriorating near vision made it harder to teach and grade her students' work. The school director would regularly complain about her vision-related difficulties and she was scared of losing her job. And Rukayat's worries extended beyond the workplace — she was also fearful of losing her sight completely. She felt great relief after we screened her vision and discovered that she only needed reading glasses and did not have any serious eye #health conditions. It's a privilege to help put someone like Rukayat at ease. With a simple pair of readers, both her vision and job are secured, allowing her to continue teaching with confidence. #SocialEntrepreneurship #SocialImpact #Health #Nigeria
