The Unseen Struggle: Challenges Facing Teachers in Nigeria Teachers in Nigeria face numerous challenges that hinder their ability to provide quality education, ultimately affecting their wellbeing and mental health. One of the major issues is poor working conditions, including dilapidated classrooms, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient resources, leading to increased stress levels. Another significant challenge is the low remuneration and benefits, which leads to demotivation, anxiety, and brain drain in the profession. Many teachers are forced to take on multiple jobs to make ends meet, leaving them with little energy and time to focus on their students, and neglecting their own self-care and wellbeing. The consequences of these challenges are far-reaching, affecting not only the teachers' wellbeing but also the students and the education system as a whole. It is essential to prioritize teachers' wellbeing, provide support, and address these issues to ensure that teachers are empowered to provide the best possible education for their students, while maintaining their own mental and emotional health. I would like to say that another face of adulthood, is life after service. We spent years in school, studying courses we might not even need because the real work is how you network, how you utilize your social skills and how you're able to create meaningful relationships. I believe that in this modern world, relationships are door openers. However, for many the NYSC also provides them the opportunity to leave their comfort zone and see what life is like out there, hence alot of individuals have gotten life skills from the scheme. The argument if it's a scam or not is really relative to individuals. For me, I just wish that our educational system will review courses so we learn what will be useful tomorrow but then again, who says education is only limited to the four walls of the university? with this time and age, one can learn just about anything to add value to their lives. The NYSC gave me the opportunity, to live outside comfort and to utilize it to the best of my ability, was it hard at first ? oh yes! but, was it worth it in the end? oh yes! One of the questions that freaks people out is when they ask, so after service what next? especially as a young person In Nigeria given the present economy. One thing is certain, we Nigerian youths are resilient and I know we will pull through irrespective of what we see. At 23, I was striving to complete my undergraduate degree In a developed country, a 23-year-old lady will probably be pursuing her PhD program or married and nursing a baby. Over the weekend, I had a conversation with a friend. We spoke about how growing up in a country like Nigeria has shaped the outcomes of our lives and may have delayed reaching some major milestones in life. My friend shared how, at 27 years old, he was not even thinking of marriage; he only wanted to survive and make ends meet. Marriage will definitely not be on the mind of a Nigerian youth who is still struggling to get a stable and well-paying job. Let's not get started on the poor education system, the ASUU Strike, tuition hikes, or the academic victimization and delay faced by many students. It is crazy how being part of a poor system can influence the trajectory of life. Delayed education causes delayed entry into the workforce, delay in major life milestones such as buying a home, starting a family, or even being financially independent, and delay in marriage. For many of us (the youths), we prioritise completing education before committing to a long-term relationship or starting a family. May Nigeria never happen to us is one prayer often prayed; in reality, Nigeria has actually happened to many of us; the level of severity only differs. I appreciate the resilience spirit in Nigerians. This one trait is unique about us; even when the going gets tough, we keep striving to find joy in chaos. Amidst it all, my heart state is gratitude, thank God for what we have. It could have been worse! but I deeply desire a new Nigeria. My vision is to ensure no one under my watch passes through the difficulties I did in acquiring a degree in a Nigerian university. My source of support through the crazy experience of living in Nigeria is God, holding on to His word that says, "All things work together for God, to those who love God and are called according to His purpose." Every excuse has an expiration date. Eventually, life will demand results, regardless of any challenges that have stood in your way. > Yes, you may be an orphan without support, but that excuse will expire one day. > Yes, you’re 27 and struggle with self-esteem because your Grade 1 teacher told you you’d never amount to anything. That excuse should have expired by now! > You say you’re unemployed because there are no jobs in Zambia, and only those with connections get hired. Really? That excuse will also expire. No one has everything perfectly figured out. 🎤The Unsung Heroes of Nigeria: Why Teachers Deserve More My teachers shaped me into the person I am today, inspiring me to chase my dreams. Yet, in Nigeria, these unsung heroes are underpaid and undervalued. Teaching isn't just a job - it's a calling that requires patience, passion, and dedication. But, our teachers are overworked, underpaid, and forced to take on second jobs, leaving them drained. I think of Mrs. Umana, my Biology teacher and other teachers, who spent countless hours shaping young minds and guiding the next generation. 😥Undervaluing teachers has far-reaching consequences: 🚩Low morale and high turnover rates, leading to a shortage of experienced educators 🚩Reduced quality of education, as overworked and underpaid teachers struggle to keep up 🚩A lack of role models, as talented individuals are deterred from pursuing a career in teaching. 🚨It's time to break the cycle of neglect and recognize the value of teachers in Nigeria. 👍Increase salaries and benefits 👍Provide training and resources 👍Celebrate their achievements 💙Let's elevate the status of teaching and give teachers the respect and remuneration they deserve. "Nurturing Optimism in Turbulent Times: A Call for Resilience and Academic Dedication amidst Economic Hardships in Nigeria" In light of the prevailing economic challenges in Nigeria, it is crucial to offer encouragement to parents, guardians, and students, urging them to persevere in their unwavering commitment to education. Despite the current hardships, education remains a cornerstone for leading a fulfilling and meaningful life, fostering the development of a well-rounded personality. Serving as an Education Officer in Lagos state, I have observed the unpredictable increase in transportation costs to and from my workplace. There are instances where I find myself meticulously calculating my remaining budget for the month. As a teacher, experiencing such financial strain, I can empathize with the multitude of parents facing similar dilemmas. Amidst these difficulties, my message to parents and guardians is one of resilience—don't lose hope, as better days are ahead. To students, I reiterate my consistent advice: the path to gratitude for your parents or guardians lies in excelling academically. Dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to education, allowing it to shape your mind and refine your thoughts. This challenging period calls for the support of social networks to aid struggling families. We are collectively navigating these hardships, and with solidarity, we will overcome. Remember, this too shall pass. Dear #National #Service #Personnel (NSP) Ghana, It's great you have come far from academic work and ushering yourselves into the work environment. Congratulations! 🌟 Your interest to staying with the company in the nearest tomorrow or not, starts now. Please know that work is not always nice, there'll be mixed feeling moments, burn-outs, exciting times, betrayals, good moments, etc. This comes with it, and it's okay you may feel so. It's simply because your body maybe struggling to adjust or adapt to a new lifestyle away from full time academia. So don't be worried, if you're getting tired, not often well, just seek permission,  to treat yourself to rejuvenate the body. While at that, be intentional about what you're learning, skill you're developing and relationships you're building. Identify gaps in the company and offer helpful solutions. Read more about the company, at your spare times often, when it comes to its annual reports (which contains information both financial and non financial), website  updates,  newsletter updates and general information about the institution and the assignment you're carrying out. You may need it for tomorrow purposes. Be planning of what next even before your end of service, to minimise any form of anxiety at the end of service term, be proactive in your dealings.
