Conserving land where people and nature can thrive.

About us

TennGreen Land Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit and the oldest accredited statewide land conservancy in Tennessee. Through sound science and partnerships, TennGreen Land Conservancy identifies and conserves land across Tennessee for wildlife corridors, critical habitat, and public benefit. TennGreen Land Conservancy protects, cares for, and connects people with Tennessee’s natural world by providing meaningful outdoor experiences, establishing conservation easements, supporting restoration efforts, and acquiring (or assisting in the acquisition of) privately-held land. Tennessee is known for its extraordinary beauty from the mighty Mississippi to the Great Smoky Mountains. Our rich forests, farms, and wetlands are not only our home but also home to a vast diversity of fish and wildlife. Tennessee is experiencing extreme human development pressure, and every missed opportunity to protect our unique lands is an irreversible loss to our future. We must act swiftly and smartly to protect the places that provide us all well-being and an unrivaled quality of life.

Updates

  • As Tennessee's oldest accredited statewide land conservancy, TennGreen Land Conservancy is dedicated to protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, the vistas we cherish, and everything in between. And all of that is made possible thanks to the generous support of our members and partners.

  • Sponsoring and participating in TennGreen's annual Hike-a-Thon is a fun way to encourage team building and further your company's wellness goals. In 2024, HK Architects sponsored the Hike-a-Thon for a second year in a row. Their employees formed a team to participate in the competition and enjoyed getting outside and exploring nature's beauty together. Pictured here is their team, the ‘HK Architreks’ on an adventure at Sunset Rock along Lookout Mountain. During the Hike-a-Thon, the HK Architreks completed a total of 208 outdoor adventures and logged more than 520 miles—so impressive! ➡️ Learn about Hike-a-Thon sponsorship opportunities: https://heyor.ca/5HZfPV

  • Good land stewardship is essential to keeping Tennessee beautiful and healthy. On occasion, we assist landowners with land management projects on their properties. One such way is through invasive species mitigation, which, thanks to awesome volunteers, we helped fight against at Harmony Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, a TennGreen-held easement property. Volunteers from AllianceBernstein recently helped remove bush honeysuckle, privet, and ailanthus from the forest. Their efforts removed more than 100 plants! If your company is interested in volunteering with TennGreen, please email chad@tenngreen.org.

  • This past fall, we expanded the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area (WMA) by more than 700 acres in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and The Conservation Fund. This WMA, comprised of nearly 200,000 acres of continuous public land, is home to some of Tennessee’s rarest and most spectacular species of birds and wildlife and one of the largest free-roaming elk populations east of the Mississippi. It provides bountiful opportunities for birdwatching, backcountry camping, hunting, and more. Beyond enhancing recreation and protecting critical wildlife habitat, this expansion helps to safeguard water quality along the New River. ➡️ Read more about this 2024 success: https://heyor.ca/bSLSiK

Every year, our team comes together to choose nonprofit organizations for our year-end giving—a tradition rooted in our shared commitment to social impact. This year, we’re excited to formalize our giving by joining 1% for the Planet, committing to environmental causes that align with our values. We asked our team to pick local environmental nonprofits, and here’s who we’ve chosen: 🌱 PassivHausMAINE: Decreasing carbon emissions, dependency on fossil fuels and the costs for winter heating in Maine. 🌊 Surfrider Foundation San Diego County: Dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network. 🏙️ USGBC California: Advocating for a sustainable, resilient, and equitable built environment in California. 🥗 Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA): Reducing hunger and food waste in Metro ATL area by rescuing healthy, nutritious, surplus food and distributing it to those in need. 🌳 TennGreen Land Conservancy: Protecting large, connected natural areas that support diversity of life, inspire appreciation of nature, and spark action to protect the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the land that sustains us all. If your org has an Employee Giving Program, where are you supporting this year?

  • We recently completed a conservation easement protecting 308 acres in West Tennessee! Located just 34 miles north of Memphis, the newly protected Chickasaw Bluff property features a towering 200-foot bluff offering sweeping views of the Mississippi River. This diverse landscape, a mix of forests and fields, is home to a variety of wildlife and shares its southern boundary with The Great River Road National Scenic Byway and Audubon’s Great River Birding Trail. With this conservation easement in place, development will be limited, and the viewshed will be protected for generations to come. ➡️ Read more: https://heyor.ca/w0XwJX Thank you to Patriot Bank and Richard C B. of United Country Real Estate for assistance in this project.

  • Please join us in congratulating TennGreen Board member, James Garges, on his upcoming induction into the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association Hall of Fame! Jim dedicated much of his career to serving the communities of Delaware, OH; Kettering, OH; and Cincinnati, OH, holding leadership roles such as Director of Delaware Parks and Recreation, Director of the City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts (where his department won a National Gold Medal), and Director of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission. Additionally, he served as Deputy Director of Recreation in Topeka, KS, and concluded his career following ten years of service as Director of Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation in Charlotte, NC. Over the course of his career, Jim contributed to state and national professional associations, serving on their boards and providing training and innovative leadership. His efforts not only advanced the profession and engaged both professionals and volunteers but also significantly enriched the lives of citizens in the communities he served. Now, we're lucky to have Jim as a member of TennGreen's Board, where he's dedicating his talents to furthering our conservation mission in Tennessee. Congratulations, James! 🎉
