"When it comes to stories of progress, there aren’t many environmental successes to learn from. We’ve seen massive improvements in many human dimensions in recent decades – declines in extreme poverty; reductions in child mortality; increases in life expectancy. But most metrics that relate to the environment are moving in the wrong direction. Although there are some local and national successes – such as the large reductions in local air pollution in rich countries – there are almost none at the global level. Yet there is one exception: the ozone layer. Humanity’s ability to heal the depleted ozone layer is not only our biggest environmental success, it is the most impressive example of international cooperation on any challenge in history." "Despite the fact that tackling climate change will be more difficult, I still think there are important lessons to learn from the ozone success story. We can tackle real global problems. We can involve every country in this process. And we can take action quickly when we’re running up against time. Perhaps the fact that we rarely talk about the ozone layer anymore is a testament to our success in tackling it, but it serves us well to remind ourselves that we are capable of cooperating on such global problems, which is why I like to return to and relive the story every so often." - Hannah Ritchie, Our World In Data (2021)

Observing how our Earth behaves and how we coexist with it is projected to provide $3.8 trillion in economic value by 2030. 🌎 This white paper by the World Economic Forum excellently breaks down that growth and demonstrates how businesses & industry can leverage climate intelligence to increase productivity while benefiting the planet. I believe the future of our coexistence with the planet depends on understanding it better and using those insights to become more productive, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. Let's be proactive about our Earth's future, not reactive.

A quarter century since we learned about ‘carbon footprints’, researchers say it’s time to change the conversation. For years, many of us have been finding ways to lower our ‘carbon footprint,’ whether by taking trains instead of planes, eating less meat, or upgrading to more energy-efficient lightbulbs. Although it’s helped us understand our impact on the climate, some environmental researchers now think the term has shifted too much of the burden to individuals. Read about it in this article for Euronews from our writer Fintan Burke: https://lnkd.in/eC8G5S-Y #ScienceJournalism #CarbonFootprint #Sustainability

Right in the middle of #ClimateWeekNYC, Rare is in this New York Times article about the value of individual climate action. Great insights from Anthony Leiserowitz, Project Drawdown, and others, too. The main takeaway: individual actions, when taken together, meaningfully move the needle on climate change. The key is finding ways to help people overcome barriers. This is where behavioral insights are critical. For example, harnessing social influences and social norms has tremendous potential. I liked this paragraph from the article: “But research has also found that social comparisons – what are my friends and neighbors doing? – had the biggest effect When customers were told how their utility use compared to their neighbors’, the higher users often decreased their consumption by one or two percent. And with solar panels, people are persuaded to install them if they see them on their neighbors’ rooftops.” Give it a read!

THIS 🙌 It's no longer solely about the climate, but about doing good for the good of business. Don't forget to tune into Toitū Envirocare's upcoming webinar where we take a business focused lens to understand the impact carbon disclosure has on your business. https://lnkd.in/g8DMfKzX
Is climate change an economic issue? Participants in our recent Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) webinar dove deep into this question, and the answer was clear: climate change isn’t just an environmental concern, it’s an economic one that will impact every business. Sometimes, framing the conversation in economic terms rather than ecological can bring decision-makers on board to drive the change we need. Integrating carbon reduction into your strategy isn’t just good for the planet - it’s crucial for your company’s long-term success in a rapidly changing market. #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #ClimateStrategy Sean Weaver Ekos

Grab yourselves a warm cup of joe as we bring you our first recommendation for our #ChangeMakersShelf series: 'The Future Earth' by Eric Holthaus. If you are feeling overwhelmed by climate change, then this book would reignite hope and empower you to become conscientious stewards for a sustainable future. Some key questions explored in the book: a) What could happen if we reduced carbon emissions by 50 percent in the next decade? b) What could living in a city look like in 2030? c) How would a world powered by 100% clean energy by 2040 operate? 🔔 Follow us, Climate and Sustainability Initiative, for more. 🔗 About the book: https://lnkd.in/gxu3uaKQ 🏷️ Tag authors making a sustainable splash in the world. #ClimateAction #ClimateAndSustainability #CSI #SustainableFuture
