The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or simply The T, is the public operator of most bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry systems in the greater Boston, Massachusetts, area. The MBTA is the largest transit provider in New England, and the fifth largest in the country. The MBTA directly operates or contracts out for service using eight different modes: heavy rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, local/express bus, trackless trolley, commuter rail, commuter boat, and paratransit. In Boston, 55% of all work trips and 42% of all trips into downtown are made by transit. The MBTA district is made up of 175 communities with a total population of 4.7 million. Almost three-quarters of all Massachusetts residents live within the MBTA service area.

"Bus Network Redesign was the result of dedication and communication from our MBTA’s BNR team, supporting T departments, and our community and municipal partners, who have worked with a shared goal to improve connectivity and service. Our bus network is a key component of our system and with the leadership of Governor Healey and the support of the Legislature, we are rebuilding our workforce allowing us to restore and enhance bus service. As part of this initial launch, we’re working hard to inform riders of the improvements coming from these changes. I thank our staff and the many volunteers that have devoted time to meeting directly with riders to prepare for this launch,” said General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “Boston communities and surrounding cities deserve more reliable and accessible transportation, and we are committed to deliver that for them.” This morning, General Manager Eng rode the new Route 104 along with MassDOT Undersecretary Morrison, Massport CEO Davey, local officials, and MBTA staff to celebrate the implementation of Bus Network Redesign - Phase 1. Route 104 is now a Frequent Bus Route with service every 15 minutes or better and crosstown connections between Malden Center, Everett, Chelsea, and Airport station. We're proud to honor Tony Whitley, Instructor in Operations Training, and the Low-Income Transit Fare Reduction Program team at the Commonwealth's 40th annual Performance Recognition Program. Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, MassDOT Secretary Tibbits-Nutt, and General Manager Eng awarded them for their exemplary work in public service. Tony Whitley received the Eugene H. Rooney, Jr., Public Service Award, which "highlights human resources development as a planned, continuous effort to provide personal and professional growth opportunities that will enhance employee competency levels. Such activities serve to improve an individual's performance on a currently held job, and/or provide new skills, knowledge and capabilities that will allow an individual to assume a new role in the organization."
