Meet Courtney Walker, who serves as a Wetlands and Water Resources Coordinator at MassDOT. She started her journey with MassDOT in January 2022 as a co-op in the Storm-water Unit, where she discovered her enthusiasm for environmental permitting. After graduating in May of that same year, she transitioned to a full-time role as an Environmental Analyst I in the Wetlands Unit. Just a year later, in May 2023, she earned a promotion to her current position. At MassDOT, Courtney evaluates various projects through an environmental perspective, helping to secure the necessary permits for their successful implementation. She enjoys spending time in the field, and one of her most memorable experiences was during a turtle sweeping training, where she searched for and documented information about turtles. This experience not only expanded her knowledge about different turtle species but was also a lot of fun. To prospective interns, Courtney advises you to learn as much as possible. MassDOT offers an abundance of resources and opportunities. Working at MassDOT means contributing to the improvement of the Commonwealth, and Courtney finds her role fulfilling as she enhances transportation and safety while also advocating for environmental health and benefits. Spring and Summer 2025 internships and co-ops are out! Check out MassDOT Careers | Mass.gov https://lnkd.in/g6K2Hbxy for more information. #Spotlight Gregory Sobczynski In 2009, I was a law school student in Boston. One evening after class, I was on the train commuting home when the gentleman sitting across from me struck up a conversation. He noticed I was reading a constitutional law book, and we chatted about this shared interest. As the conversation progressed, I learned I was speaking with the then director of MassDOT's Civil Rights Office. He shared information on how I could apply for an internship, which I eagerly pursued the following semester. That chance meeting on the train set me down the path from intern, to contractor, to staff, to manager where today I serve as the Director of Title VI & Accessibility. Whenever MassDOT interacts with or has an impact on the public through the services we provide, through the projects we develop, and through the plans we implement, my obligation is to ensure that this is done in a nondiscriminatory way. For example, when we decide which projects to prioritize, are all communities benefiting from our decision? When we provide vital information about our services, is this information effectively communicated? When we receive a complaint, what can this tell us about possible improvements that could allow us to serve the public more effectively? The programs I manage reflect analyses, procedures, and innovations focused on equal access for the public. I experience a great deal of professional satisfaction when my colleagues showcase their accomplishments. I have always approached the civil rights obligations I manage as a shared responsibility, and I have enjoyed watching my colleagues embrace the principles of this work and innovate around their unique strengths. It shows that this work is very much alive and thriving. Be intentional about empowering others. This can serve you well at all stages of your career, making you a better colleague and a better manager. #MassDOT #ODCR #EmployeeAppreciation
