❤️🔥 What a difference a touch of positivity and passion has! I’ve had such an enjoyable first few weeks at The Old Courthouse in Cheltenham and although there is much work to be done, I cannot stress how exciting it is to be part of the project we’re building here. It’s amazing how passion, positivity and direction is all you need to engage a team and help them get firing in the right direction. I don’t think we value it enough in Hospitality. 🌟Care about your team. 🌟Care for your guests. 🌟Set goals that you can all strive together for as a unit. One thing I will always remember from a mentor of mine; 🌟Hospitality isn’t just customer service, labour costs and financial percentages. 🌟It’s about how you make your guests ‘FEEL’ and leaving your venue with a happy memory of the service and staff, the atmosphere and the experience. If we can get this part right it’s more than half the battle we have as leaders in the industry. 🚗✨ Special Edition: Jan and Sherri Chronicles! ✨🚗 YWCA OKC is one of United Way Partners. Last week, Jan, CEO of YWCA OKC and I were asked to present to OG&E. I drove, and once we arrived downtown, there was only one parking space left. I attempted to parallel park but didn’t quite get it right. This is where the fun begins… Jan: Sherri, the car is out too far.  Me: (Numerous attempts to park with no success) Jan, can you go ahead and park the car for us while I pay?  Jan:  Sure, Sherri. (She successfully parks) As we are walking around the corner to OG&E… Jan: What do you do when there's a parking space that requires parallel parking?  Sherri: I drive around the block until I can find one that doesn’t require parallel parking.  Jan:  I will just have to teach you how to parallel park. 😁 (Big Colgate smile) Lesson to Learn:  🚀 In business, just like in parking, you can't always avoid challenges. Instead of circling the block looking for an easier option, face the challenge head-on. Seek help when needed, learn new skills, and soon, you'll be navigating through tight spots with confidence. I made a One Second Decision ⏳ Last Friday evening, I experienced something I often talk about—the One-Second Gap. 💡 It’s that critical moment when you’re faced with a situation, and before reacting, you pause for just one second to make your decision. I was at Baker St. Station waiting for the tube home BUT it was going to take another 20 minutes to arrive. 🚇 If you’re a Londoner, you know that 20 minutes is ABSURD. I thought about changing trains. I’ll take the Circle Line to Euston Square, walk to Euston Station and take the Overground from there. 🚶♂️ But I made the decision to stay and wait. I had to make a few calls, send a few emails so I could make use of the time. 📞✉️ Then it happened. I caught a glimpse of a person I’ve been trying to get a hold of for months. 👀 So I went and sat down next to him and we had a great conversation. He opened up some doors for me and connected me to people at his company. 💼 From that “mundane” decision to wait for the train, it generated a potential game-changing opportunity for us. 🔑 It might seem insignificant, but that single second can change everything. 💥 Has this ever happened to you? Today, I’m celebrating five incredible years at The Loading Dock! It’s been a wild ride, and I’m excited to share (finally!) that I stepped into the role of President back in March. You might wonder why it took me five months to make this announcement; and the truth is, I doubted myself. In January, after months of restructuring, I told our founder that I felt I needed to step away—that the company needed someone with more experience to lead us through the challenges ahead. I doubted my ability to manage our finances, heal a fractured team, and rebuild trust and joy within our culture. I wasn’t sure I could juggle all the spinning plates. Thankfully, Philip Freeman didn’t ask me to leave. Instead, he listened and held space for my fears, but most importantly, invested in executive coaching for me. Through daily reflections and guidance from my coach, Janie Brooks, I began to shift my mindset. Slowly but surely, I rediscovered my voice and started to believe in my ability to help turn the ship around. What once felt like insurmountable challenges became opportunities. Our team leaned in, committed to rebuilding, and together, we developed a playbook that fortified our culture, mission, vision, and values. We refined our hiring practices to ensure the right people were in the right seats, and we simplified our focus to three goals around team health, financial health, and member experience. When I was ready to throw in the towel, our team stepped up to the plate. Collectively, we’ve rebuilt our culture, strengthened the health of the company, and—most importantly—brought FUN back into our day-to-day. As I embark on my sixth year at The Loading Dock, I couldn’t be more excited for our future. This place inspires good, sets the table for connection, and cultivates an ecosystem of professional support. Its honestly a REALLY cool organization that I get to be a small part of.
