The CICT is working to improve the workplace experience for employees in the construction sector and drive productivity
About us
Culture in Construction is an initiative of the Construction Industry Culture Taskforce (CICT) - comprising the Australian Constructors Association, the Governments of New South Wales and Victoria and leaders from industry and academia. Since August 2018, we've been working to develop a new Culture Standard which will lift the productivity and performance of construction and address the major issues holding back our industry - excessive work hours, fatigue, poor mental health, and failure to attract a diverse workforce. The CICT works alongside the Construction Industry Leadership Forum (CILF), a joint forum of leaders from industry and the Victorian and NSW public sectors. CILF aims to drive improved collaboration and action around procurement and delivery of major government infrastructure projects, including by addressing capability and capacity constraints.

We are so proud to have received the RMIT Design and Social Context College Award for Research Excellence (by a Team) for our research work on the Culture in Construction project. The research is providing an evidence base for a new Culture Standard addressing key challenges faced by the Australian construction industry, specifically: ✅ improving gender diversity in the industry's workforce, ✅ enabling workers to have more time for life, and ✅ helping to improve workers' physical and mental health. The ceremony was held at the magnificent Capitol Theatre in Melbourne. Pictured here are some of the team members (from left to right) Dr Chenjunyan (Yan) Sun, Dr Payam Pirzadeh, Dr Katy Chan (and me). Unfortunately our other team members, Professor Michelle Turner and Dr Jack Clarke, were unable to attend the ceremony. It is so rewarding to work with such an excellent research team in close collaboration with the members of the Construction Industry Culture Taskforce who have funded and supported our research. We are immensely grateful to the managers and workers at the five construction projects that trialed the draft Culture Standard for providing us with access to so much qualitative and quantitative data over the life of these Pilot Projects. Thanks also to our partners at the The Australian National University, University of Sydney and Frontier Economics for their valuable contributions to the research program. This project has been a standout in terms of the depth and strength of collaboration both within the academic team, and with our industry and government partners. We are excited to be consolidating the vast amount of data collected and preparing a final report due for release early next year! Thank you also to Prof. Tim Marshall, Prof. Ralph Horne and Dr John Bonacci at the DSC College for recognising our work in this way. 💙 Today is International Men's Day – a day to celebrate worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, to their families and communities. We recognise the significant positive impact of men as role models in our society, especially for young boys. 🧠 Today is also a day of raising awareness about men's health issues, wellbeing and mental health and the devastating and alarming rates of male suicide. _______________________________________________________________________________ 🎧 To kick things off - we've just released a new podcast episode with Ludo Gabriele where we talk about gender equity and masculinity in the workplace. Listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/gSPezZCk Some themes we discuss in this podcast: 💙Recognise days like today; International Men's Day - To open up conversations about men’s health, workplace culture, and wellbeing. ✅ Inclusive parental leave: When male leaders role model caregiving, it paves the way for cultural shifts, proving that men bring value far beyond 'traditional' roles. 👨🏽💼Create affinity groups for men in the workplace - That focus on health which creates a safe space for men to share their challenges and experiences. 👉🏼 Everyday life and values: Challenge outdated attitudes and gender norms, and show our sons that being a good man means being caring, present, and emotionally available. By making these shifts, we not only support men today but also set a better example for the next generation. Let’s build a society where men can show up fully – at work, at home, and in the community. #InternationalMensDay #IMD24 #GenderEquity #RoleModeling #MensHealth

The NSW Government is delivering some of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia and they want women’s participation in these projects to be a standard in the industry. Minister for Transport, Jo Haylen said: “The workforce delivering Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 enabling works will be supported by wellbeing initiatives from the Culture Standard, which include a target for 40% female staff participation during project enabling works, flexible working hours and on-site mental health first aiders. “It also includes a move to a five-day working week on the construction site, a reduction from the six-day working week that’s a frequent barrier to women entering the industry.” As we move towards broader implementation of the Culture Standard, the CICT is immensely grateful to Transport for NSW for their continued support. Today is your last opportunity to register for our free webinar on 14 November. Join us as our research team shares the findings of our industry research, and hear insights from project teams who have worked directly with the Standard.
