  • It has been another huge year for the NSW Women in Construction Program and we are so proud of what the Program has achieved.     In 2024, we have:   - Awarded $2.2 million in grant funding to 13 industry initiatives that will encourage the participation and retention of women in the construction industry.   - Launched the Women in Construction newsletter to ensure our stakeholders have the latest updates.   - Hosted the NSW Women in Construction Forum with three ministerial sponsors and over 200 attendees from across the construction sector.   - Developed and launched the Women in Leadership video series to showcase examples of inspiring women and different construction careers.   - Supported the NAWIC NSW - National Association of Women in Construction’s International Women’s Day event and held a networking event with over 400 attendees during Women in Construction Week.   - Released the Women in Construction Year 2 Industry Survey and survey report, providing a critical evidence base for the program.   - Announced the Bank Street Park initiative which will call on industry to achieve a stretch target of 50% women on the project.   - Expanded the number of Government projects trialling increased targets (4% women in trades and 7% women in non-traditional roles), this is now up to 23 projects across NSW.   - Held 29 briefing sessions with members of industry and Government. We look forward to growing this list of achievements even further in 2025!

"If women are set on wanting to join the construction industry or if they are interested…I'd say 100% join, I've had no regrets", Site Engineer Emily Asson tells us. At Sydney Metro, we're focused on empowering women to consider education and careers in construction. Since the start of the project, more than 8,000 women have helped deliver Australia’s biggest public transport project. A diverse workforce is a valuable asset and generates better outcomes. As Project Director Alia Karaman says in the video below, “what women bring to the workforce and particularly what I'd like to say I bring is a different outlook, is the way we look at problems, the way we solve problems". In the first video of our Women in Construction series, produced in collaboration with NSW Women in Construction, hear from Sydney Metro's leaders on the value women bring to the construction industry. • Great to see one of our Industry Innovation Program initiatives - HumeLink EmPOWERing Regional Women - preparing women to enter the construction industry via a locally run pre-employment program in the Southern Tablelands. Following a seven-week training program, all participants have now graduated from the program and are ready to begin their careers in construction 👷🏽♀️🎉

ICYMI: There’s 17 more women headed into the NSW construction industry. ✅ As this article in the Tumut and Adelong Times explains, the women from regional NSW have completed 7 weeks of training under the EmPOWERing Regional Women Program. It’s prepared them for a range of opportunities to deliver the Humelink transmission line. Congratulations everyone! 🎉 Participant Charmain Angove told the publication: “We’ve had comments walking down the street in our PPE about how fascinating it is to see so many women dressed for a construction site and I tell them ‘watch this space because we’re coming’.” #youcan’tbewhatyoucan’tsee #endthegenderpaygap #genderequality

  • The Master Builders Association of New South Wales, an Industry Innovation Program funding recipient, is currently conducting research into the impact of workplace humour, including banter, on women in the NSW construction sector. In collaboration with RMIT University’s School of Property, Construction and Project Management, the research will examine the positive and negative aspects of onsite humour and gain insights into its effects on women’s health, well-being, and career retention. By studying these dynamics, they aim to foster a more inclusive, respectful, and supportive culture within the industry.   If you are a woman working in the industry, you can have your say by participating in their confidential, 10-minute survey. The survey closes on Saturday, 30 November 2024.   The insights gained from this survey will play a crucial role in understanding the challenges women face and help to bridge the gender gap in the industry.   You can take the survey here - https://lnkd.in/gRnjfid3
