Women working in construction are making a significant contribution to our industry, and as a critical part of the workforce now and into the future, Health Infrastructure is committed to supporting their continued growth and success. Infrastructure NSW has released the findings of its annual Women in Construction survey, which aims to enhance the understanding of key culture and diversity challenges, as well as the opportunities to drive change. Health Infrastructure is proud to be part of the NSW Government’s Women in Construction Program, which has embedded project officers on 8 of our largest project sites, with these officers working to attract and empower female workers. We also believe in fostering a healthy work-life balance and are strong supporters of the five-day work week, with flexible working hours embedded across our projects to support all workers involved in delivering essential health infrastructure. We thank Infrastructure NSW for tracking and sharing these vital insights into the working lives of women in construction. Together, we can continue to drive change in our industry. The $411 million St George Hospital Redevelopment has reached a major milestone, with construction of the new 9-storey building reaching its highest point. Premier Chris Minns and Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper celebrated the milestone with a traditional “topping out” ceremony, lifting an Australian native tree onto the roof. The tree will later be planted in the building’s forecourt. The new building, which includes two levels of basement parking, will bring together community and outpatient services under one roof. Construction of the new building is expected to be completed in late 2025, with the landscaping, including a new public forecourt and green spaces, and final refurbishment works to be completed in 2026. The $940 million RPA Hospital redevelopment is being supported by a strong Aboriginal workforce who are playing a key role in the construction of the project. Biripi man Brendan Syron is a third year electrical apprentice and one of more than 40 people identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Straight Islander people who has worked on the project, with numbers continuing to grow as work ramps up on site. “Being part of this redevelopment means a lot to me personally. It’s about contributing to something that will benefit the entire community, while also paving the way for more Aboriginal people to enter the industry,” Mr Syron said. Through the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Skills Legacy Program (ISLP), the project is creating opportunities, developing skills and capacity for Aboriginal workers, and contributing to greater diversity on site. To date, almost $3 million has been spent in the first year of main works on Aboriginal contractors and sub-contractors employing First Nations people.
