Pioneering a cleaner, kinder way of making beef.

Over ons

In 2013, our Chief Scientific Officer Professor Mark Post unveiled the world’s first cultured meat hamburger to a packed press conference in London. The burger was harvested directly from cow cells, rather than raising and slaughtering a whole animal. It was the result of years of research at Maastricht University, and cost €250,000 to make. The effort was funded by Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google. Our motivation was to find a new method to make real meat to feed our fast-growing population in a sustainable, healthy and animal-friendly way. Following the success of the first hamburger, we created Mosa Meat to commercialise cultured meat (also known as clean meat, cultivated meat or cell-based meat) and bring it to plates everywhere. In the past few years we’ve made significant scientific breakthroughs, and brought the price down considerably. We’re now focussed on scaling up the production process, and getting our first products to market.

  • We are honoured to participate in COP29 in Azerbaijan at the invitation of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, the governments of Belgium and Luxembourg, and the European Investment Bank. Our own Robert E. Jones hosted a lively discussion with the Climate Envoy of the Netherlands, H.R.H. Prince Jaime de Bourbon de Parme, and representatives of dsm-firmenich, Clim-Eat, and EIT Food on protein diversification as a strategy to bolster climate resilience and food security. Protein is an essential part of a healthy diet. Yet, one in eight people struggle to meet daily recommended levels while large parts of the developed world overconsume animal proteins. This imbalance, combined with the environmental impacts of intensive meat production, has us on a collision course that must be addressed. This is core to Mosa Meat's mission to make beef in a new way while creating additional revenue opportunities for farmers to grow nutrients for our cells and helping to feed a growing planet nutritious food.  We are fortunate to have a fantastic partner in the Dutch government. The Climate Envoy rightly pointed out their multi-stakeholder approach, ambitious national protein strategy, first-of-its-kind 'tastings protocol,' and National Growth Fund support of a cellular agriculture ecosystem, out of many examples of their diversified approach to future-proofing food and agriculture. Now, we need to keep the pressure on other countries to prioritize food and agriculture in these critical climate negotiations.  #cellularagriculture #cop29 #cultivatedmeat Nationaal Groeifonds | Cellulaire Agricultuur Nederland

We are proud to share that we’ve organised the first formal tasting of our Mosa Burger in The Netherlands. Participants included Dutch cattle farmers, food product developers and industry representatives who shared their candid tasting feedback with us. The goals for these tastings include assessing market readiness of products and collecting feedback from culinary experts for product development purposes. Maarten Bosch, our CEO said: "We are delighted to finally share our burgers with experts outside of the company, so they can help us create the best burgers possible. In this first tasting we specifically evaluated the potential of cultivated beef fat as an ingredient in a blend with plant based ingredients, as we know it is responsible for the flavour, aromas, mouthfeel and even sizzle people love from beef. We’ve been able to conclude that our cultivated fat has a very positive impact on the product quality This means that in addition to the cultivated beef for which we have submitted a regulatory approval request in Singapore, we can also elevate the culinary experience of plant based products and delight more beef lovers faster.” #mosaburger #cultivatedmeat #cravechange
