At Fair Wear Foundation, we work to create a garment industry that is fair for everyone.

Over ons

Fair Wear Foundation (Fair Wear) works with garment companies to improve labour conditions in the garment industry. Members of Fair Wear - European garment companies - work towards improving the labour conditions in factories that produce their garments. The basis of the collaboration between Fair Wear and a member is the Code of Labour Practices. Fair Wear verifies whether companies comply with the Code of Labour Practices, by keeping track of the improvements made by the companies it works with. The truth is that most garments and sewn products are not (yet) made in fully compliant conditions. For this reason, Fair Wear does not claim that its members’ products are produced in full compliance with labour standards. Fair Wear does however verify that members are working hard, step-by-step, in this direction. Every year, Fair Wear publicly reports on the companies’ progress through the Brand Performance Checks. Fair Wear's verification system exists at three levels: Fair Wear verifies at the company level to check whether companies implement the Fair Wear Code of Labour Practices in their management systems effectively and Fair Wear verifies at factory level. Finally, Fair Wear implements a complaints procedure in all countries where it is active. This enables the workers at the factory to bring to light (anonymously) any abuses related to labour conditions. Fair Wear joins together business associations, trade unions, and NGOs as equal partners at every level of Fair Wear activity – from decision-making at the Board level to workplace verification. Each stakeholder group has an important role to play in improving working conditions, and the impact is that much greater when they all work together. Fair Wear's more than 80 member companies represent over 120 brands, and are based in Europe; member products are sold in over 20,000 retail outlets in more than 80 countries around the world. •  📢 Announcement 📢   We are pleased to announce that Fair Wear has completed the OECD - OCDE’s alignment assessment of industry initiatives for due diligence in the garment and footwear sector. As it stands, we are the only organisation in the garment industry that has been fully assessed on both standards and implementation and reassessed on standards.   We are exceedingly grateful to the OECD for their continued support throughout this valuable process and look forward to amplifying our efforts on ensuring due diligence implementation is both impactful and practical.   To read our response to the alignment assessment report, please see here: https://lnkd.in/eBSM4Ni4   To read the report in full, please see here: https://lnkd.in/di-xUWwA

🆕OECD - OCDE alignment assessment of Fair Wear Foundation against OECD due diligence recommendations – report out! #FairWear has taken significant steps to strengthen alignment with the OECD #Garment & #Footwear #duediligence Guidance and comes out partially aligned for the revised standards assessment (2024) and the implementation assessment (2022) ➡️ Download the report for details: https://brnw.ch/21wPym9 ➡️ Read Fair Wear's response: https://lnkd.in/eBSM4Ni4 The #FairWear assessment is part of the OECD’s ongoing work to assess sustainability initiatives to: ➡️ promote more reliable public information on sustainability initiatives ➡️ increase understanding of their role in due diligence, and their appropriate use ➡️ improve their credibility and alignment with OECD due diligence standards. 📖 The OECD carried out an initial full assessment of #FairWear between 2020-2022 (assessment of written standards, implementation & governance), followed by a re-assessment of revised standards in 2024. No re-assessment of implementation or governance was carried out. The assessment included: 👉 over 40 interviews with Fair Wear staff, board members and representatives from the committee of experts, auditors, member brands, factory managers, international and local civil society organisations, multi-stakeholder initiatives and trade unions 👉 4 shadow assessments of Fair Wear’s brand performance checks 👉 extensive document review of over 49 Fair Wear standards and policies Many thanks to #FairWear for your willingness to volunteer for an alignment assessment and for the time and effort spent by staff and members - and congratulations on the improvements made to foster alignment with OECD due diligence standards. 🌐Human rights and environmental due diligence is increasingly on the global policy agenda as governments seek to promote more sustainable financial flows and supply chains. Sustainability initiatives are adapting in different ways, leading to multiple and at times conflicting expectations on companies and confusion about what initiatives do and do not do, and what role they should and should not play in due diligence. While sustainability initiatives can be a multiplier for effective risk-based due diligence, they can also lead to over-reliance by companies if they are not understood and used in a way that is consistent with the international standards. 🔗 Read more about the OECD's work on sustainability initiatives: https://brnw.ch/21wPyma Allan Lerberg Jørgensen, Hannah Koep-Andrieu, Dorothy Lovell, Emily Norton, Andrea Schill Thorfinnur Omarsson Fair Wear Foundation #Sustainability #SupplyChains #RBC

  • Celebrating the winners of the Klaus Hohenegger Essay Competition!   Last week, Fair Wear and Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) proudly honoured the winners of the Klaus Hohenegger Essay Competition. This initiative challenged fashion students and graduates to critically address the systemic issues faced by garment workers, inspiring bold ideas for change in the fashion industry. Named after Klaus Hohenegger — an industry pioneer and advocate for living wages — the competition celebrates his legacy of innovation and commitment to human rights. Klaus’ groundbreaking tools, such as the Thrive Methodology and Fair Price App, continue to inspire efforts to transform exploitative practices and empower workers worldwide. The jury praised  Madeleine Tipping’s winning entry for its innovative use of AI to address excessive overtime, a forward-thinking solution Klaus would have embraced. The second-place essay by Ana-Maria Thome 🟥 offered a powerful call to action for organised labour and collective solutions to achieve living wages, demonstrating sharp analysis and pragmatic vision. A special mention of Emily Cooper for her fresh perspectives and research into marketplace dynamics. We were deeply impressed by the passion, creativity, and commitment of all participants. These essays highlight how the next generation is embedding sustainability and ethics into the heart of the fashion industry.  This competition is also a heartfelt tribute to Klaus Hohenegger, whose work continues to inspire us all to push for industry-wide change in the garment sector. • Really important research into how to enhance the impact of Works Committees by STITCH Partnership 👏

Celebrating #HumanRightsDay 🌍 On this Human Rights Day (10 December), Mondiaal FNV shines a spotlight on workers' rights with new research developed under STITCH. This study dives into the role of Works Committees (WCs) in promoting Freedom of Association. WCs are a legally mandated structure aimed at addressing workplace concerns in Indian factories employing over 100 workers. The conclusion? While WCs are effective in addressing and resolving workers’ day-to-day challenges, they fall short of fostering trade union formation or enabling workers to fully exercise their right to Freedom of Association—an internationally recognised cornerstone of workplace democracy. The paper provides actionable recommendations for employers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to enhance the impact of WCs. Plus, it explores ways to empower workers to unionise and amplify their collective voice. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eeRxn_m7
