As the working year comes to a close we wanted to share with you again our "Cities, placemaking, living and the net zero challenge" report, our first, published last month, which explored the work of UK cities to develop regeneration and placemaking in conjunction with the transition to net zero. The transition to net zero is probably the biggest generational challenge we will face. It is vast and will impact every strand of people's lives as we move towards a lower carbon future. But it is not the only challenge we face, and not the only challenge that our cities are facing today. We wanted to explore how cities are approaching this. Not just how they are planning to decarbonise their operations but also how they are incorporating other challenges such as the regeneration of places, addressing the housing crisis and the constant provision of services in a harsh economic environment. We spoke to a number of cities on what they have been doing, as well as consulting with other stakeholders involved in the development of our cities. Brighton & Hove City Council have published "The Decarbonisation Pathways Study", a first for the city, which sets out how it can fully decarbonise its energy system, with energy-efficient and low carbon homes, businesses and transport. The study identifies 110 priority projects, including rooftop solar panels, energy efficiency improvements to homes and businesses, more EV charging and the rollout of heat networks and heat pumps. Sustainability for Housing has joined forces with Housemark to enhance ESG reporting across the social housing sector. The new collaboration will mean the creation of a centralised portal for sustainability reporting, supported by benchmarking and analytics capabilities, and an extra layer of validation as part of the annual reporting cycle. A new energy centre providing low carbon heat has opened in Midlothian. The centre developed by Midlothian Energy Limited, a joint venture between Midlothian Council and Vattenfall will serve 3000 homes in the first phase of a new heat network. NetZero Collective have provided advice and support to Crawley Borough Council to help them secure grant funding for the development of a decarbonisation strategy for 13 high-energy consumption assets. The project will deliver actionable and affordable retrofit measures to support the council in its journey towards net zero across its commercial portfolio. Over two years they have facilitated over 50 contracts with housing providers and local authorities across the UK, unlocking more than £200m worth of construction opportunities.
