As the working year comes to a close we wanted to share with you again our "Cities, placemaking, living and the net zero challenge" report, our first, published last month, which explored the work of UK cities to develop regeneration and placemaking in conjunction with the transition to net zero. The transition to net zero is probably the biggest generational challenge we will face. It is vast and will impact every strand of people's lives as we move towards a lower carbon future. But it is not the only challenge we face, and not the only challenge that our cities are facing today. We wanted to explore how cities are approaching this. Not just how they are planning to decarbonise their operations but also how they are incorporating other challenges such as the regeneration of places, addressing the housing crisis and the constant provision of services in a harsh economic environment. We spoke to a number of cities on what they have been doing, as well as consulting with other stakeholders involved in the development of our cities. As always a big thanks to E.ON UK, Equans UK & Ireland - In Focus and Mears Group PLC for their support for this programme of work. https://lnkd.in/e-bTiK-Z #action #urgency #learnfromdoing #solutionsatscale #cities #placemaking #regeneration #togetherwecan #unlocknetzero

A key learning from our report published this week is that we should not look at decarbonisation as a series of isolated activities across a number of different sectors but rather we should view it from a single place-based perspective. Our “Cities, placemaking, living and the net zero challenge” report explores the work of UK cities to develop regeneration and placemaking in conjunction with the transition to net zero. Read our report to learn more about how local authorities are looking towards place-based decarbonisation approaches as they work on the complementary agendas of placemaking, regeneration, housing and the net zero transition. With thanks to E.ON UK, Equans UK & Ireland - In Focus and Mears Group PLC who have supported this programme of work. https://lnkd.in/eC_pWUqT #action #urgency #learnfromdoing #solutionsatscale #cities #placemaking #living #netzero #citiesreport #togetherwecan #unlocknetzero

Following on from the success of our conference yesterday - "Building Sustainable Cities Beyond 2030", we are excited to share some key takeaways from each of the panels. Panel 1: Implementing National Policy to Deliver Sustainable Buildings & Placemaking – What’s Next for Net Zero? The opening panel, moderated by Andrew Colwell of Fleetsolve, explored how national policies are guiding regional efforts towards Net Zero. Key themes included ensuring affordable, sustainable housing and retrofitting existing properties. the discussion featured an impressive lineup of industry experts: James Johnson, Head of Regional Program - North West Net Zero Hub, Ian Stenton, Head of Estates Sustainability - NHS England, John Moffat, Managing Director - Capital&Centric & Centric, Nick Gosling, Chief Strategy Officer - Vital Energi Utilities Limited One major takeaway was the need for whole-life carbon assessment embedded in regulation to meet UK Net Zero standards. Another pressing challenge is closing the skills gap in construction, which is crucial for achieving sustainability goals. Collaboration between the public and private sectors was highlighted as essential for overcoming barriers. The panel also stressed the importance of a holistic approach to sustainability, balancing economic, social, and environmental well-being in community development. This session set the tone for the day’s discussions, making it clear that the journey to Net Zero is not just a construction challenge, but a community-wide effort. #NetZero #SustainableHousing #BuiltEnvironment #Collaboration #CarbonReduction #SkillsGap

Today we celebrate World Cities Day. UN Secretary- General António Guterres emphasizes that we should view urban areas through the lens of sustainability, resilience and prosperity rather than seeing them solely as engines of growth. INTOSAI WGEA’s Research Project on Greening Cities – Sustainable Urban Development highlights common urban challenges that cities face, including waste management, air quality, drinking water supply, transportation, sewage sector infrastructure, green spaces and rising noise levels. According to the UN, investing in and developing infrastructure can act as a catalyst for strengthening institutions, shaping policies, and enhancing capacities at all levels and across all government levels and sectors. Chapter 3 of the research project, in particular, focuses on examples of good audit practices regarding Greening Cities.
