‘Moving the dial’ The saying “young people are the future” is especially relevant to how and where we live, work and play. Young people inherit the world we’ve made…. but they have no say today in designing or planning it. Yet our ‘built environment’ – villages, towns, cities - embody so many issues that govern quality of life, particularly our health and wellbeing and that of the planet. We know young people do want to understand how we make and manage what we build to tackle the challenges they will face. They want and should be part of this and definitely one way is through participation, engagement and education. So how can we all move the ‘dial’? My journey started with creation of initiatives for London’s future generations with #mycitytoo #accelerate #architectureinschools #archikidsfestival #summarerarchitectureacademy and more as director of Open City who are now all young adults or more! This new journey has been the creation of @thorntoneducationtrust, committed to spotlighting initiatives and practices, organisations, developers, local authorities that put children and young people at the heart of designing inclusive spaces together with the launch of the Inspire Future Generations Awards 4 years ago. #ifgawards This year we again have incredible #judges for the Inspire Future Generations Awards, all of whom have been brilliant in contributing to ‘moving the dial’. I’m really looking forward to joining with them to be memorised by all the inspiring entries!
